Toledo Will Face Michigan in First Round of NCAA Championships

Rockets and No. 7 seed Wolverines will go head-to-head in Ann Arbor on Saturday

5/1/2023 7:29:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio – For the first time in program history, the Toledo Rockets will be heading to the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. Toledo (18-5) will face No. 7 Seed Michigan (24-4) in first-round action on Saturday, May 5 in Ann Arbor at 1:00 p.m.

The Rockets, who were gathered to watch the bracket pairings in the Grogan Room at Savage Arena on Monday evening, erupted in celebration when their name showed up on the screen.

"It's very exciting and gives our MAC Tournament Championship even more validation to see our name posted in the bracket," head coach Al Wermer said. "To be in a quad with California and LSU at Michigan is going to be a blast. We have some familiarity, of course, with Michigan because we see them here and there, and I know they've got a few very strong players. We're looking forward to this weekend!"

Toledo won an automatic berth into the national tournament by winning the 2023 Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Western Michigan on April 23. It was the Rockets' first league title since 1973 and first for head coach Al Wermer in his 26 years at the helm. Toledo won seven MAC titles from 1966 to 1973 but the NCAA did not move to a team format for its championships until 1977.

Michigan holds a 16-0 edge all-time in head-to-head matches vs. Toledo, although the two teams have not taken the court together since 2016. The Wolverines advanced to the Elite Eight of last year's NCAA Tournament before losing to Ohio State, 4-2.

Two-time MAC Player of the Year Pawit Sornlaksup leads the Rockets at No. 1 singles. Sornlaksup was also named first-team All-MAC and was a member of the MAC All-Tournament Team for the second-straight season. No,. 2 singles player Krzysztof Wetoszka earned first-team All-MAC and joined Sornlakup on the all-tournament team.  No. 4 singles player Adam Kovac was named second-team All-MAC. Wermer was named MAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.

Michigan will host the first two rounds at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor for the second-straight season. LSU and California will play the first match on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and will play the winner between Toledo and Michigan in the second round on Sunday, May 7 at 1:00 p.m.
