Senior Amelia Lee ties for first place at three-over par
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Toledo women's golf team finished 11 strokes in front of its nearest competitor to capture first place on Saturday at Bowling Green's Dolores Black Falcon Invitational. The Rockets shot a team score of 28-over par 604 at the par-72, 5,911-yard Stone Ridge Golf Club to win their first tournament title since March 4-5, 2019 at the Battle at Boulder Creek.
"Winning always feels great, but this one is very sweet with it being a rivalry win," Head Coach Jenny Coluccio said. "We are proud and this journey has taken effort from everyone on the roster. Our players have really committed to the direction we want the program to go and the spring has been a culmination of all their hard work and dedication to that process. There have been many victories along the way, this one just had a trophy come with it."
Toledo's team total of 604 is tied for fourth-best in a 36-hole tournament in program history. It is just two strokes shy of the record set previously at the 2004 Illini Spring Classic and the 2006 William & Mary Invitational.
Senior Amelia Lee led the way individually by nearly capturing her second tournament title of the season. She tied for first place at three-over par 147 (73-74) but lost in a playoff against Loyola's Grace Suter.Â
Sophomore Yedam Lee notched her fourth Top 10 finish this spring by tying for fourth place at five-over par 149 (75-74). Junior Cheryl Hong tied for 13th place at nine-over par 153 (74-79), while junior Angel Hii tied for 17th place at 11-over par 155 (80-75). Junior Macy Hanus carded a seven-over 79 today after being disqualified following the opening round.
Â
Junior Kaitlyn Natividad paced Toledo's four individuals competing in the tournament by tying for a career-best 20th place at 12-over par 156 (79-77). She was followed by senior Claudia Sampson (T-32nd/79-80-159), sophomore Cameron Ford (T-62nd/85-83=168) and senior Kathryn Roth (71st/89-95=154).
Â
"I want to thank our graduating seniors Claudia and Kathryn who have been pillars for our program," Coluccio said. "We are becoming who we are because of them. It was special to have their final regular-season event be a win!"
The Rockets will now set their sights on the 2023 Mid-American Conference Championships. UT will have nearly two weeks to prepare before heading to Kalamazoo, Mich. on Friday-Sunday, April 21-23.
"Our focus for MAC will continue to be on the details and fine tuning the process we have been refining this spring," Coluccio said.
