TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team extended its winning streak to six games on Wednesday with a 91-73 win vs. Buffalo at Savage Arena.
The Rockets (18-4, 9-2 MAC) led for nearly the entire game and turned in one of their best offensive performances of the season. They cracked the 90-point barrier for the third time and assisted on 23-of-31 field goals while committing a season-low five turnovers. Toledo was 15-of-33 from beyond the arc, the most made threes in a game since sinking 16 vs. Akron on Jan. 14, 2015. The five turnovers are the fewest since committing just three vs. Charlotte on March 30, 2011.
The win kept the Rockets one game out of first place in the Mid-American Conference standings. Bowling Green (10-1) and Ball State (10-1) have won 10 straight games and eight straight games, respectively, to keep their one-game cushion atop the conference.
"We were really happy to get this win tonight because Buffalo has played a lot of teams in our league really tough," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "I was really proud of the fact that we jumped out to an early lead, and especially for holding them to only seven points in the second quarter to help build our lead. It was nice to see us shoot the ball well tonight too, especially from three."
Senior Quinesha Lockett was terrific vs. the Bulls, scoring 25 points while sinking a career-best seven three-pointers. Lockett's seven threes are one off the program's single-game record of eight, which is held by four different players. She stuffed the box score on Wednesday, also adding six rebounds, four assists, and two blocks.
Senior Sophia Wiard contributed 19 points, seven assists, and five rebounds while committing zero turnovers. The MAC's leader in assist/turnover ratio, Wiard's now stands at 2.91, which would have ranked fourth in the nation entering tonight's game.
Also reaching double figures in scoring were sophomore Jessica Cook (11 points) and junior Khera Goss (10 points), and junior Nan Garcia contributed nine points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench. The Rockets won the battle on the boards on Wednesday, outrebounding UB 43-29.
Jazmine Young was one of four Buffalo (9-11, 4-7 MAC) players to reach double figures, scoring a team-high 20 points. The Bulls shot 43.5% from the floor (27-for-62) and 43.5% from three-point range (10-for-23).
Toledo will play four of its next five games on the road starting this Saturday at Miami. The lone home matchup taking place during this stretch will be on Saturday, Feb. 18 vs. Eastern Michigan at 2:00 p.m., which will be the annual "Rockets for the Cure" game. The game will help benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Northwest Ohio and the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center. The Rockets encourage everyone in attendance to wear pink that day in support of breast cancer research.
