Toledo Defeats Purdue in Non-Conference Finale, 5-2

Pawit Sornlaksup extends winning streak to 31 matches in Sunday’s win vs. Boilermakers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Toledo men's tennis team ended its non-conference schedule with a 5-2 win vs. Purdue on Sunday afternoon in the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, In. The win is the third-straight for the Rockets and ends their non-conference schedule with an 8-3 overall record before conference play starts in two weeks.

"This match was extremely close and hard-fought," head coach Al Wermer said. "It was a great test for the team. I feel really good about today because our guys are showing a lot of improvement in many areas."

Junior Pawit Sornlaksup extended his singles match winning streak to an incredible 31 matches with his win at the No. 1 court.

Toledo gained the early advantage going into singles play after winning the doubles point thanks to two 6-2 victories on the No. 2 court from Marko Galic and Adam Kovac and on the No. 1 court from Sornlaksup and Krzysztof Wetoszka.

Purdue tied the match 1-1 following a two-set victory from the No. 5 court. Galic put Toledo back in the lead with a close two-set final from the No. 4 court. Sornlaksup then took down Daniel Labrador in a three-set final from the top court and put the match at 3-1. The Boilermakers added another win to their lineup after a grueling three-set decision at the No. 3 court. Luis Kleinschnitz clinched the final match point from the No. 6 court in a come-from-behind 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 victory vs. Hassan Baroudi.

Wetoszka forced a third set decision from the No. 2 court after dropping his first match 6-3 and winning the second set by the same score. In the final set, Wetoszka secured the final court for Toledo with a 6-4 decision over Michal Wozniak.

Toledo will head out to Orlando, Fla. next weekend for its Alumni event from Saturday-Sunday, March 4-5 at the USTA National Campus. Mid-American Conference play will begin upon the Rockets' return on Saturday, March 11 at Ball State.
