Toledo is coming off a runner-up finish at the MAC Championships last month in Bowling Green.
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's cross country team will lace up for the postseason this Friday, Nov. 8 in Madison, Wis., for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship Meet. The men's 10K championship race is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (ET) at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.
The Rockets are coming off their third consecutive runner-up finish at the Mid-American Conference Championship Meet last month in Bowling Green. Sophomore Dennis Mutai made a statement at the Mel Brodt Cross Country Course, running a course-record time of 23:57.19 to become the first Rocket ever to win the men's 8K race. First-year head coach Tito Medrano also made program history as the first Toledo coach to earn MAC Men's Coach of the Year.
Mutai received first-team All-MAC honors, while senior Benjamin Otis (11th) and senior Geoff Howles (14th) earned second-team honors for a second consecutive year.
The Rockets, just four points shy of conference champion Akron's 55 team points, are looking to become the program's first men's team to qualify for the national race. Last year, UT had its highest NCAA regional finish at ninth place with Mutai pacing the Midnight Blue and Gold with a 34th individual finish.
Toledo, currently ranked No. 9 in the Great Lakes Region, will be fighting for an automatic berth to the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18 in Charlottesville, Va. The top two teams earn an automatic ticket to NCAAs and an additional 13 schools will be selected from the nine regions as at-large teams. The top four individuals to cross the finish line will qualify and two at-large racers not competing in a team will advance to the national race.
