Ryann Jaqua becomes UT’s all-time career digs leader
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's volleyball team faced first-place Western Michigan for the second straight day on Saturday, falling to the Broncos in three sets.
The Rockets (12-16, 10-7 MAC) will have to wait and see how Bowling Green (15-12, 9-7 MAC) and Central Michigan (14-14, 8-8 MAC) fare on Saturday evening to determine their MAC Tournament standing. Toledo would clinch a tournament spot with a loss by either team.
Following the match, the Rockets honored nine seniors as a part of their Senior Day festivities: Taylor Alt, Jada Bouyer, Claire Eiden, Abby Erickson, Ryann Jaqua, Mary-Kate Lopez, Payton Morman, Rachel Pierce, and student manager Rachel Schneider.
Jaqua had an extra-special Senior Day, as she became Toledo's all-time career digs leader in the first set. Her third dig of the match was number 2,261 of her career, which eclipsed Maurissa Leonard's (2015-18) previous record of 2,260 career digs.
Jaqua had 13 digs on Saturday, the lone Rocket to hit double figures. Alt and sophomore Izzy Granger both tied for the team lead with 13 kills, and Alt hit a team-best .333. Freshman Macy Hatkevich returned to action and started at setter, tallying 27 assists.
Toledo concludes the regular season on Wednesday at home vs. Ball State.
1st Set (25-22, Western Michigan)
Toledo led early on, taking a 12-8 advantage over WMU. The Rockets' lead disappeared, however, following a 9-2 run for the Broncos that put the score at 17-14. Toledo didn't go down without a fight, and later in the set scored three straight points to tie the score at 22-22. That would be the final time UT held a share of the lead, as the Broncos scored the final three points to win the set, 25-22.
2nd Set (25-15, Western Michigan)
Both teams held early leads, but with the score tied at 7-7 Western Michigan took off and quickly built what proved to be an insurmountable lead. A 10-2 WMU run put the score at 17-9, and the final score in the second set would settle at 25-15 as Toledo found itself down 0-2 in the match.
3rd Set (25-20, Western Michigan)
Western Michigan led wire-to-wire in the third set, taking an early 8-3 lead and never letting it go. Toledo was unable to string together enough points to overtake the Broncos, and the third set ended with a final score of 25-20.
