OXFORD, Ohio – The Toledo women's volleyball team improved to 4-1 in MAC play on Thursday with a three-set sweep of Miami.
Fifth-year senior
Ryann Jaqua reached an impressive milestone on Thursday, becoming the second Rocket ever to reach 2,000 career digs. Jaqua led all players with 22 digs. The longtime back row stalwart has 2,007 career digs, which puts her seventh among active Division I players in career digs.
Backed by the play of Jaqua, Toledo had no problem dispatching Miami on Thursday night. It marked the second straight season the Rockets defeated the RedHawks, the first time they have won back-to-back matches in the series since winning three in a row from 2004-06. Toledo has now won four of its last five matches.
After a close first set that came down to the wire, Toledo wasn't seriously challenged in the second and third sets. The Rockets never trailed in the final two sets and hit a combined .362 over the final two frames to make quick work of the RedHawks
"It is always tough to play in Millett Hall and I am so happy that we got a championship effort tonight," head coach
Jason Oliver said. "Miami is always tough to play at home and we found stretches of great play that really hurt them."
Seniors
Taylor Alt and
Jada Bouyer led the way offensively. Alt tallied 13 kills and hit .417 while Bouyer added 10 kills and attacked at a .588 clip. Freshman
Macy Hatkevich provided 33 assists and helped direct and offensive attack that hit a season-best .333. Senior
Abby Erickson recorded a match-high four blocks.
The Battle of I-75 resumes on Friday night at Bowling Green with the Rockets and Falcons facing off at 6:00 p.m.
1st Set (25-23, Toledo)
The first set was the closest of the night, and the only set that Miami was able to hold a lead. The RedHawks led for a significant chunk of the first set, and held a two-point lead as late as 17-15. A kill from
Abby Erickson sparked a 6-0 run that put Toledo up, 21-17. That proved to be enough to squeak by the RedHawks, though they did pull to within a point very late at 24-23. Toledo captured the first set on a kill from
Taylor Alt to win, 25-23, and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
2nd Set (25-19, Toledo)
The Rockets zoomed out to an 8-2 lead to grab control of the second set early. They never trailed in the set, and from that point on never led by fewer than four points. A solo block from
Macy Hatkevich provided the clinching point to give the Rockets a 25-19 win. Four Rockets had three kills in the second set: Alt, Erickson,
Brooke Naniseni, and
Jada Bouyer.
3rd Set (25-13, Toledo)
Toledo scored the first four points of the fourth set and, following a 3-1 Miami run, scored six consecutive points to open up an 11-3 lead. The RedHawks strung together five straight points to trim UT's lead to five, but a 6-1 run bumped the Rockets' lead to 10 points, 20-10. Alt once again provided the clinching point to end the set and, this time, the match to complete the sweep. Toledo hit .429 in the third set and held Miami to a .000 attack percentage.
