Rockets look to capture program’s first conference title
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's cross country team is looking to make history as it attempts to win its first Mid-American Conference Championship title this Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Mel Brodt Cross Country Course in Bowling Green, Ohio. The 8K race is set for 11:00 a.m.
Toledo's previous best finish came as league runner-up in both 2021 and 2022. The Rockets return seven of the nine runners from last season's second-place team, including All-MAC honorees Dennis Mutai (4th), Benjamin Otis (13th), and Geoff Howles (14th) who will be leading the pack this weekend.Â
Toledo's first-year assistant head coach Tito Medrano has doubled the Rockets' roster and brought in a couple of high-profile transfers to add depth to an already veteran team. Senior Max Matolin and junior Sean Smith have earned their way into this weekend's starting nine. Senior Jake Rethman, senior Ben Towler, junior Charles Kipchumba, and sophomore Joshuah Taylor will get another start in the conference race. Also making the trip to Bowling Green are senior Cooper Losey and freshman Peter McMahon.
Toledo has finished in the top 10 of all four races on its schedule this season, with its highest team finish being third place at Bowling Green's Falcon Invitational on Oct. 13.  Mutai and Taylor have the highest individual finishes by a Rocket this season, both coming in sixth place at different races. Mutai ran a 23:50.0 in the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational 8K (Sept. 29), and Taylor ran a PR of 25:02.2 in the Falcon Invitational 8K.
