Rockets Fall to Falcons, 5-4, at Fifth Third Field

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team met Bowling Green at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday night and fell to the Falcons by a score of 5-4 in front of 2,618 fans.

For the second straight season, the Rockets and Falcons engaged in a back-and-forth affair in Downtown Toledo. BGSU used a four-run bottom of the third to take an early 4-1 lead, but Toledo fought back to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh. Bowling Green then scored the go-ahead run on a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the eighth and squashed a potential UT rally in the top of the ninth to win, 5-4.

"Tonight was a great game in front of a ton of fans," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "It was an awesome college baseball game. It could have gone either way, right down to the last pitch. You can't ask for much more than that."

Senior Nicky Winterstein had a terrific night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Junior Darryn Davis added a two-run home run and redshirt freshman Trey Wright went 2-for-4 at the plate. Senior John Servello walked three times and played outstanding defense in right field all night.

Junior Kyle Music got the start on the mound and threw three innings and was followed by freshman Brennan McCune, who pitched four innings in relief and struck out five. Junior Cal McAninch pitched an inning out of the bullpen on Tuesday night as well.

"We've been swinging the bats pretty well, but I give Bowling Green a lot of credit," Reinstetle said. "They pitched well against us tonight and all weekend. We had some very close games with them, tonight included. We just need to continue to get ready for Northern Illinois this weekend because our season continues if we continue to play well."

Next up for Toledo is a four-game home series this weekend against Northern Illinois. It was announced earlier on Tuesday that the schedule for this weekend's series will be altered due to weather. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m. that will be followed by single games on Saturday and Sunday, both of which will start at 1:00 p.m.

How it Happened
  • The Falcons nearly opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first with a base hit into right field, but Servello threw out the runner trying to score for the third out of the inning.
  • Winterstein got the Rockets on the board first with a solo home run to right field to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
  • BGSU grabbed the lead with a four-run third inning to make it 4-1. A base hit tied the game at 1-1, then Jack Krause cleared the bases with a three-run triple.
  • Davis put the Rockets back within a run with a two-run bomb in the top of the fourth.
  • Winterstein came through again in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4. Wright led off the inning with a base hit, then advanced to second on a sac bunt by freshman Caden Konczak. Two batters later, Winterstein's base hit to right field scored Wright and tied the game.
  • Bowling Green's Adam Furnas led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, then scored on Nathan Rose's suicide squeeze two batters late to plate the go-ahead run.
  • The Rockets did not go down easy, putting runners on second and third with one out in the top of the ninth, Freshman Brian Fry drew a one-out walk, then advanced to third on Winterstein's single up the middle, but both runners would not advance any further as the Falcons retired the final two batters to end the game.
