Toledo Defeats Ball State to Advance to MAC Championship Match

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The No. 2-seed Toledo men's tennis team defeated No. 3-seed Ball State 4-1 in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Championships on Saturday. The Rockets' win advanced them to the finals match for the first time 2011.
The tournament has a different format of scoring than the regular season, where the first team to four points wins the match.
Toledo started out strong in doubles competition, winning the team point from Cole Shoults/ Krzysztof Wetoszka (6-3) on the No. 2 court and clinched by Marko Galic/ Pawit Sornlaksup (7-5) on the No. 1 court.
Sornlaksup put the Rockets ahead in the match, 2-0, with a sweep on the No. 1 court, his 21st-straight match win and third win over a BSU No. 1 singles player. Danila Kovacevic put a point on the board for the Cardinals, winning the No. 2 court in two very close sets (7-4, 6-4). Wetoszka won the No. 3 court over Nathaniel Webster, and junior Luka Jankovic clinched the match for the Rockets on the No. 5 court in a 6-4, 6-4 win over Vince Orlando.
"It was not real easy conditions out there for anyone," said head coach Al Wermer, who recorded his 299th career win on Saturday. "Nobody has gotten acclimated to the heat this spring, so the level of play wasn't terrific. But we took care of our business."
Toledo will face No. 1 seed and tournament host Western Michigan on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Kalamazoo, Mich. at the West Hills Athletic Club.
The last time that Toledo was in the MAC Men's Tennis Championship finals was in 2011 (L, 4-1 vs. BSU). And the last time UT faces Western Michigan in the finals match was in 2001 (L, 4-3).
