Rockets End Weekend with a Win Over North Carolina A&T, 7-6

AUBURN, Ala. – Sophomore Riley Mohr's groundout scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift Toledo to a 7-6 victory over North Carolina A&T on Sunday, at Auburn's Jane B. Moore Memorial Tournament.

Freshman Sidney Griffith ignited the Rockets' offense vs. North Carolina A&T in the first inning with a leadoff triple to center field. Senior Dayna Denner followed with an RBI single to put Toledo on the board. Sophomore Arika Reed registered an RBI single in the second, and senior Aubrey Reed blasted a two-run homer to plate two runs for the Rockets in the third. The Aggies rallied with two runs in the fourth, hit a three-run homer in the fifth, and tied the score with a solo home run in the top of the seventh.

" We got off to a nice lead and were scoring every inning," head coach Joe Abraham said. "It looked like we might cruise to a victory, but their bats came alive and we had to fight and scratch for another one. The good thing is that we have now won two in a row of those instead of losing them by one. Our pitchers are slowly getting better and better, our defense is getting better and better and even though about half of our lineup is out with injuries, we have plenty of bats to do damage."

"The other thing we are getting is some good pinch-running," Abraham said. "We use them a lot and they are making good decisions and getting us some key runs. In the bottom of the seventh today, our No. 3 hitter laid down a great sac bunt and we just executed the entire inning to get that winning run."

Toledo (5-10) will immediately head to Madeira Beach, Fla. for The Spring Games on Thursday-Saturday, March 10-12. The Rockets will play five games which can be streamed via a subscription to FloSoftball.
