KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Toledo baseball team bounced back and won both games of its doubleheader at Western Michigan on Monday. After dropping two games on Sunday, the Rockets returned the favor on Monday to sweep the Broncos, 7-5 and 13-4.
"I'm really proud of the team and how we bounced back after a tough day yesterday," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "We let one slip through our fingers yesterday and could easily be riding home 3-1 on the weekend. We got two really good starts on the mound today from
Jordan Power and
Connor Brandon, and we played excellent defense as well. The best thing about today was our offense finally started to show signs of hitting like we are capable of. We need to build off this and start playing more consistently. We've been on the road for five weeks now and finally get to play at home next week when we take on a talented Miami team."
The Rockets used the long ball to take an early lead in the first game, slugging three home runs to take a 6-1 advantage. The Broncos rallied in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back homers, but UT escaped with a 7-5 win. Sophomore
Scott Mackiewicz, senior
John Servello, and junior
Mason Sykes all blasted homers for Toledo in the first game. Senior
Jordan Power earned the win with five solid innings on the mound and junior
Cal McAninch earned his second save of the season.
In game two, Toledo took advantage of several WMU unforced errors to build an insurmountable lead. The Rockets scored 11 runs over the sixth and seventh innings by using four bases-loaded walks, a bases-loaded HBP, and three wild pitches.
Sophomore
Connor Brandon threw six innings and struck out 10 in game two, while sophomore
Camryn Szynski and sophomore
Kyle Pijaszek provided strong pitching out of the bullpen. Szynski pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four, while Pijaszek tossed a scoreless bottom of the ninth. Sykes and sophomore
Jeron Williams both tallied two RBIs in the second game and Sykes scored a game-high three runs. Junior
Darryn Davis and freshmen
Brayden White and
Garret Pike all scored twice.
The Rockets' patience at the plate paid off bigtime in game two; they drew 14 walks, a season-high and the second-most walks drawn by a MAC team this season.
Toledo plays at home for the first time in 2022 this weekend against Miami. The Rockets and RedHawks will kick off their four-game series on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
