TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's basketball team will host Miami on Wednesday afternoon at Savage Arena. The game is scheduled to tip off at 2:00 p.m.
The start time of Wednesday's game was pushed up due to potential inclement weather. Heavy snowfall is in the forecast for the Toledo area, with 10-16 inches predicted between Wednesday and Friday morning.
Because of the time change, there will be no broadcast for Wednesday's game.
The Rockets (15-4, 9-1 MAC) sit in first place atop the MAC and got back on track this past weekend with a 71-67 win at Bowling Green. Toledo led wire-to-wire against the Falcons but saw a double-digit lead dwindle to just five points in the final minutes. The Rockets were able to hold on, though, and bring home a close win.
Four players scored in double figures on Saturday, with Sophia Wiard leading the way with 20 points. Wiard was 6-of-10 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, and made 6-of-7 free throw attempts. Jessica Cook had a strong game, posting her third double-double of the year with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Cook has played exceptionally well as of late, scoring in double figures in four of the last five games. She ranks third on the team in scoring (8.8 PPG) and rebounding (5.8 RPG).
The Rockets rank 17th in the latest edition of CollegeInsider.com's Mid-Major Poll. They are one of two MAC teams in the Top 25, two spots ahead of No. 19 Buffalo.
Following Wednesday's game, Toledo will play five of its next seven games on the road, beginning with a trip to Akron this Saturday, Feb. 5.
Rocket Notes
- Defense has been a strength for the Rockets this season, as they have led the MAC in scoring defense (59.32) and field goal percentage defense (35.5%) for much of the season. Opposing teams have shot above 40% from the field just twice and Toledo is one of two MAC teams allowing fewer than 60 PPG (Western Michigan, 59.75).
- In MAC play, opponents are averaging just 60.1 PPG and are shooting just 35.1% from the field against Toledo. UT ranks first in the MAC in field goal percentage defense and second in scoring defense in league play.
- Offensively, the Rockets have cracked 70 points in six of the last seven games. UT reached the 70-point benchmark five times in the first 12 games of the season.
- The Rockets are shooting 75.9% from the free throw line in MAC play this year. They have shot over 80% from the line in a game five times in conference play.
- Individually, Sophia Wiard (88.5%) and Quinesha Lockett (84.2%) are shooting above 80% from the line in conference play.
- Perennially among the national leaders in attendance, Toledo is right back near the top of Division I in 2021-22. UT is averaging 3,419 fans per game in three home games this year, which ranks 24th in the nation in average attendance. Toledo's next home game is Wednesday, Feb. 2 against Miami.
- Five Rockets have notched double-doubles this season: Quinesha Lockett (4), Jessica Cook (3), Nan Garcia (1), Sammi Mikonowicz, and Sophia Wiard (1).
- A Rocket has recorded a double-double in each of the last three games: Cook had one against BGSU on Saturday, Mikonowicz had one against Ohio, and Lockett had one against Buffalo.
- Since reclaiming her spot in the starting lineup, Jessica Cook is averaging 12.0 PPG and 8.5 RPG over the last four games.
- Cook crashes the offensive boards as well as anybody; the freshman is averaging 3.41 ORPG (5th in the MAC) and tied a season-high with eight offensive boards against Ohio last Wednesday.
- Sophia Wiard led the MAC in assist/turnover ratio last season and is second in the league this season (2.27).
About Miami
Miami (6-11, 2-6 MAC) is riding a four-game losing skid, its most recent setback coming at home on Saturday to Eastern Michigan, a game the Eagles won 80-69. The RedHawks do crash the offensive boards well; they lead the MAC in offensive rebounds per game (14.06) and they sit second in the conference in steals per game on the other end (10.53). Junior guard Peyton Scott is one of the top scorers in the MAC, averaging 19.1 PPG.
These two teams will be seeing each other again soon, as they'll reunite in Oxford next Wednesday for a 7:00 tip once again.
