Sharpshooting Rockets Down RedHawks, 74-64

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's basketball team had one of its best shooting performances of the season in Wednesday's 74-64 win over Miami at Savage Arena.
 Â
The Rockets (16-4, 10-1 MAC) shot 54.2 percent from the field, making 26-of-48 shots against the RedHawks (6-12, 2-7 MAC), their second-highest field-goal percentage of the season. UT's offensive efficiency helped land five players in double figures, led by junior Quinesha Lockett and her 18 points.
Â
Toledo's 16-4 start is its best record through the first 20 games of a season since the 2012-13 campaign when the team began 18-2. The win also helped the Rockets maintain their hold on first place in the Mid-American Conference.Â
Â
"We're really happy to get this win today," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "Miami is a really scrappy team, especially in the fourth quarter. We knew that no matter what the score was, they were going to really play hard in the fourth quarter. We expected them to make a run, and they did, but I'm proud of our players for keeping their focus. It was also great to see five players in double figures today. I thought we shared the ball really well. I love how unselfish this team is. MAC play is never easy. It doesn't matter who you're playing, and it feels good to get a victory today."
Â
In addition to Lockett, four other Rockets scored in double digits. Senior Jayda Jansen and junior Sophia Wiard scored 12 points apiece, sophomore Sammi Mikonowicz added 11 points, and freshman Jessica Cook scored 10. Wiard also collected a game-high seven assists and Mikonowicz led all players with 10 rebounds, her third double-double of the season and her second in the last three games.
Â
"She's comfortable doing a lot of things for us," Cullop said of Mikonowicz. "She keeps our team pretty steady. Her composure has gotten better. There's a lot of different little areas of the game where she contributes, and it's been really good watching her mature into this kind of player."
Â
Miami was led by Ivy Wolf and her game-high 20 points. Peyton Scott (17 points) and Edyn Battle (14 points) both scored in double figures for the RedHawks as well.
The game was played at 2:00 p.m. instead of 7:00 p.m. as previously scheduled due to impending inclement weather in the Toledo area.Â
Next up for Toledo is a road contest at Akron this Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2:00 p.m. The Rockets will play five of their next seven games on the road.
