TOLEDO, Ohio – The No. 16 Toledo women's cross country team will begin the post season this Friday, Nov. 11 when it runs the 6K race at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship. The 10:00 a.m. race will take place at the LaVerne Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
Toledo will be one of 32 women's programs competing at the Great Lakes Regional Championship meet, with the top two teams earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championship meet on Saturday, Nov. 19 in Stillwater, Okla. An additional 13 schools will be selected from the nine regional as at-large teams. Individually, the top four finishers from each race, and two at-large selections not on an advancing team will qualify for nationals.
"The objective is to go out there and compete as hard as we can and make sure that we do everything we can to take care of business and control our own destiny," said director of cross country and track & field Andrea Grove-McDonough. "Hopefully we finish in the top-two so we can roll out of here knowing that we're on our way to Stillwater. That's the goal, the number-one goal. The number-two goal is to run as well as we can and beat as many of the Big Ten teams that we need to be in front of to feel good about walking out of here, and hopefully controlling our own fate with an automatic bid into the NCAA's.
"Ultimately, we need to compete as a team with a lot of poise and composure, and just try to make sure we can punch that ticket."
The reigning Mid-American Conference Champions are coming off a stellar performance at the conference meet in Athens, Ohio on Oct. 29, coming away with their second-straight MAC crown. All nine Rockets ran personal-best times, with finishing in the top-10 and six in the top-13.
Sophomore Joy Chirchir (second) and seniors Faith Linga (third) and Lou Trois (sixth) earned First-Team All-MAC honors. Seniors Emily Vining (eighth) Madeline Vining (10th) and Julia Dames (13th) were named Second-Team All-MAC following the race. Grove-McDonough was named MAC Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
The Rockets will have to bring the same dominant energy into this Friday's meet to reach the NCAA Championship Meet as a team for the first time since 2014. The women's best finish under the current regional system was third place in 2010, 2011, and 2014. Last season, the Rockets finished 11th as a team and were led by Chirchir, who finished in 21st-place overall.
Individually, Toledo's best regional finish was a first-place finish by Briana Shook in 2002, and the best championship finish was 24th by Shook, also in 2002.
