TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team completed its competition at its Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational on Sunday, recording eight more wins against IUPUI, Case Western and Duquesne at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
"This was a rewarding and productive weekend for us because we contributed to the fight against cancer," head coach Al Wermer said. "We had some celebratory times with our new Varsity T Hall of Fame Inductee, Stjepan Sisko, and our players enjoyed a competitive array of regional warm-up tennis."
Toledo had a tough challenge against IUPUI, recording two wins. The doubles team of junior Pawit Sornlaksup and senior Marko Galic took down Blessing Benibo and Will Thurin in a tough 6-1, 7-6(1) matchup. Freshman Matias Olivero recorded the lone singles court win for Toledo, besting Eli Mercer in a three-set match (6-4, 3-6, 1-0(4)).
The Rockets took on Case Western for the second time this weekend, with Sornlaksup and Galic recording singles wins, both in two sets. In doubles competition, junior Vlad Meluta and senior Krzysztof Wetoszka dropped their first set to CWU's Sahil Dayal and Chris Provenzano, won the second set to force a third-set tiebreaker, but lost the match 10-7.
Toledo swept all four of its singles matches against Duquesne with help from Sornlaksup, Galic, Wetoszka and senior Luis Kleinschnitz. Duquesne's only victory was in the doubles match with David Georgadze/ Kaipo Marshall defeating junior Adam Kovac with Olivero in a close 6-3, 7-6(3) final.
Toledo will be back in action this week at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regionals in Champaign, Ill. on Oct. 20-24.
