TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo men's tennis team is hosting the Rocket Invite this weekend and wrapped up a long day of competition on Friday afternoon.

The Rockets played matches against Bellarmine, Chicago, and Kenyon to open the weekend.

"This is the first competition for some of our players in months for various reasons, so it's some rough waters, but I think the guys fought pretty hard together," head coach Al Wermer said.

The Rockets opened the day against Bellarmine and won five of the six matches they played. Sophomores Vlad Meluta and Wojciech Szczesny won the lone doubles competition, 6-4. Sophomore Adam Kovac (6-3, 2-6, 10-3) and junior Krzysztof Wetoszka won their singles matches, as did a pair of newcomers. Junior Marko Galic (6-2, 6-2) and sophomore Pawit Sornlaksup (6-4, 6-1) came away victorious in their first appearances wearing the Midnight Blue and Gold.

Later in the day, Toledo took on Kenyon and also won five of the six matches. Galic and Kovac teamed up to win in doubles play (6-3, 6-3), while Meluta and Sornlaksup also defeated their Kenyon counterparts in doubles (6-0, 6-2). Wetoszka (6-2, 6-3) once again was victorious in singles play, as were juniors Luis Kleinschnitz (7-5, 6-3) and Max Skaer (6-3, 7-5).

Toledo wrapped up its day against Chicago, winning three of the five matches played. Meluta and Sornlaksup improved to 2-0 in doubles play with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 win. Kovac (7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4)) and Wetoszka (6-1, 6-3) both remained undefeated in singles play with wins in the final match of the day.

Competition continues on Saturday. Toledo has yet to play Case Western and Northwestern Ohio, and will play them tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. and Noon, respectively. Six matches are currently scheduled for Saturday, with the Sunday schedule still to be determined.
