Toledo Ties Cincinnati 1-1 for Second Consecutive Draw

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Toledo scored first but had to settle for a 1-1 tie against the Cincinnati Bearcats in Cincinnati on Sunday. The tie was the second in as many games for the Rockets, making them 0-0-2 to start the season. 

Senior Ashton Cassel tallied Toledo's first goal of the season, giving the Rockets a 1-0 lead early in the second half. But the Bearcats answered with a goal of their own to tie the score at 1-1 in the 64th minute. Both teams had opportunities to score in the closing minutes of regulation and in overtime, but the defenses prevailed and the contest remained a draw.

Sophomore goaklkeeper Emma Boutorwick logged four saves for the Rockets.


"Our players did a good job dealing with Cincinnati's strong attack," said Head Coach T.J. Buchholz. "Cincinnati has a certain way they like to play and I thought our team navigated their style of play effectively today. Our team had to endure another overtime test on the road and I am proud of how hard they fought for 110 minutes."

  • 16' | Cincinnati applying pressure early.and Boutorwick used a diving effort to log the first save of the game.
  • 49' | Olivia Dault nearly tallied the first goal of the game, but an outstretched arm of Cincinnati goalkeeper Anna Rexford knocked it away.
  • 50:10 | GOAL - Ashton Cassel guided the ball past Rexford for the first goal of the season for Toledo, granting the Rockets a 1-0 lead. 
  • 63:43 | GOAL - Chloe Spittler headed in a Karli Royer corner kick to tie the score for Cincinnati.
  • 78' | Cincinnati had a few attempts in the box, but the Toledo defense stood strong and prevented the Bearcats from getting a shot on goal. 
  • 79' | Boutorwick made another diving save to maintain the tie score. 
  • 94' | In overtime, Cincinnati rang a shot off the crossbar, but the ball settled out of play.
  • 99' | In the final minute of the first overtime, Toledo freshman Olivia Dault connected on a header that made its way to the net but Rexford knocked the ball away, forcing a second overtime period. 

Stats, Notes and Numbers
  • Cassel logged her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career with a goal in the second half. She has scored one goal in each of her four seasons with Toledo. 
  • This was the first meeting between Toledo and Cincinnati since 2003. It was the first tie between the two teams.
  • This is the first time in program history that the Rockets have started a season with two consecutive ties. 
  • Olivia Dault led Toledo with two shots with two, and now has five on the season to lead the team.
