BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Toledo softball team visited arch-rival Bowling Green for a doubleheader on Wednesday, earning a twin bill split against the Falcons.
The Rockets rebounded to win the second game, 2-1, after dropping the first game by a score of 5-4.
Toledo trailed 5-1 heading into the top of the seventh in game one before
Dayna Denner launched her 13
th home run of the season, a three-run shot to pull the Rockets within one. Unfortunately UT's comeback attempt would end in the next at-bat, allowing BGSU to take game one.
Denner reached base in all four of her at-bats in the first game, walking three times in addition to blasting her seventh-inning home run. Her 13 home runs are tied for second in program history and two away from breaking the all-time record set by Bailey Curry in 2018 (14).
Erin Hunt tossed a complete game in game two to improve to 15-11 on the season, striking out four and allowing just the one run. Denner was 3-for-4 at the plate in the second game, while
Jenna Kroll drove in both runs for the Rockets.
Next up for Toledo is a four-game series at Ball State this weekend.
How it Happened (Game 1)
- BGSU's Madi McCoy gave her team the lead with a solo home run in the top of the first.
- Raquel Emery tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second with a sac fly, driving in Sydney McKeever.
- McCoy hit her second home run of the game in the top of the third to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
- Bowling Green added three runs in the top of the fourth to move ahead of the Rockets, 5-1.
- Toledo nearly came back to tie it in the top of the seventh. Lexi Eckman reached on an infield single, and Aleah Marra drew a two-out walk, then Denner lifted the first pitch she saw over the fence in right-center field for a three-run bomb to put the Rockets within one, 5-4. The comeback would fall short though as the Falcons took game one.
How it Happened (Game 2)
- Toledo scored first on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Anna Dixon led off the game with a walk, then two batters later Denner doubled down the line in left field to put runners at second and third. Macey Moore drew a four-pitch walk and then Kroll also earned a free pass to bring in the first run of the game.
- Kroll's sacrifice bunt in the top of the third brought home Lily Beyer and put the Rockets ahead, 2-0.
- Hunt didn't allow a ball to reach the outfield until a base hit to left field in the third inning. BGSU had two runners in scoring position in that inning, but Hunt forced two harmless popups in the infield to get out of the inning.
- Bowling Green nearly mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Greta L'Esperance reached on a triple, then scored on a groundout to shortstop to make it 2-1. The next two BGSU batters reached base, but Hunt was able to work her way out of trouble and get the third out to clinch the victory.
