IOWA CITY, Iowa – Freshman Barend Botha fired a season-best six-under par 66 in today's opening round and is tied for fifth place following 36 holes at Iowa's Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday. Botha's play at the par-72, 7,157-yard Finkbine Golf Course helped the Toledo men's golf team to a fifth-place standing at seven-over par 583.

Botha was at even-par through his first nine holes of his opening round before posting an eagle on the par-five, 486-yard No. 15 hole. He then birdied five of his next six holes to notch his best round as a Rocket.

Juniors David Amm (72-74) and Muhammed Afif Mohd Fathi (72-74) also registered solid performances for Toledo today and are tied for 21^st place at two-over par 146.

Rounding out the Rocket lineup are senior Nate Thomson (78-75) and sophomore NJ Botha (76-77) tied for 53^rd place at nine-over par 153.

No. 43 Iowa leads the 12-team field at 18-under 558, with the Hawkeyes' Alex Schaake topping all individuals at 11-under par 133 (65-68).

The tournament's final round will begin tomorrow with an 8:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start.
