Rockets Suffer 2-1 (OT) Setback to Northern Illinois

TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo dropped a 2-1 (OT) decision to Northern Illinois at Paul Hotmer Field on Sunday afternoon after the Huskies rallied for a pair of late goals.
"I thought we improved quite a bit from game one to game two and I was much happier with our performance," Head Coach TJ Buchholz said. "We didn't win but it was a step in the right direction with a lot of good performances from our young players who are seeing a lot of action due to injuries."
Sophomore Stephanie Currie put the Rockets (0-2) in front just under 14 minutes into the second half when junior Betsy Lueck stole the ball from a Huskies' defender and fed Currie. Toledo's leading scorer from a year ago then placed the ball just inside the right post to break the scoreless deadlock.
The Rockets had a few opportunities to score an insurance goal, including a well-placed corner kick from senior Sophia Lewis at the 77' mark that the Huskies' goalkeeper grabbed before the Rockets could capitalize.
Northern Illinois' Haley Hoope knotted the score at 1-1 with 4:58 remaining when she eluded Toledo's defense to head in a corner kick.
The Huskies' Kierah Meier netted the game-winner 3:09 into the extra session. She took a pass from Hannah Kroupa just outside the penalty box and put it in the back of the net.
"At the end of the day you have to find a way to win," Buchholz said. "We had the game locked up, but we didn't win. We need to learn from this, keep our heads up and keep working. I think we have a lot to work with from our performance today."
Toledo is back in action on Friday, March 12 when it hosts Central Michigan at 2:00 p.m. at Paul Hotmer Field. Streaming of the contest can be seen on ESPN+.
