Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Toledo Falls at Dayton, 69-60

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, a 69-60 setback at Dayton in a Wednesday matinee matchup at UD Arena.

Dayton (2-1) scored the first 10 points of the game and didn't look back, leading wire-to-wire. The Flyers would lead 20-8 at the end of the first quarter, putting the Rockets (2-1) in an early hole they would not overcome.

"If you take away the first quarter, we win the game," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "It's unfortunate that we spotted them 12 in the first quarter. I was proud of our effort after that. We had our chances where we cut into their lead a bit, but it seemed like when we were knocking on the door we'd turn the ball over or give up a couple offensive rebounds on the other end. The other thing I said to them after the game was we just played a team that returned everybody, and we have a lot of new faces, and to play as well as we did for three of the four quarters was encouraging."

Junior Quinesha Lockett tallied a team-high 22 points, her sixth straight 20-point game dating back to last season, and added a team-best four assists. Sophomore Nan Garcia scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds, while classmate Khera Goss added nine points. Junior Sophia Wiard led Toledo with seven rebounds.

The story of Wednesday's game was Dayton's play on the glass; The Flyers outrebounded the Rockets 48-30 and held a 17-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Both teams had similar shooting efforts, as Toledo made 37 percent of its field goals (22-for-59) and Dayton connected on 24-of-61 shots, good for a 39 percent field goal percentage.

Toledo will have a short break before returning to the court next week. The Rockets will travel to Mexico for the Cancun Challenge, with games scheduled against Idaho State and Seton Hall next week.

1st Quarter
  • Dayton started out the game making its first four field goals and jumping out to a commanding 10-0 lead.
  • Goss broke Toledo's scoring drought, scoring a couple of baskets to trim the deficit to six, 12-4, at the 6:58 mark.
  • The Flyers' lead grew to as many as 14, but Lockett's last-second layup to end the quarter settled the score at 20-8.

2nd Quarter
  • Dayton extended its lead to a game-high 18 points midway through the quarter, going up 33-15 with 5:40 to go until halftime.
  • Junior Hannah Noveroske sparked an 8-0 run by scoring three straight baskets inside to trim the Rockets' deficit to 10, 33-23, at the 2:38 mark.
  • The Flyers scored four of the final five points of the first half to take a 37-24 lead into the locker room.

 3rd Quarter
  • The second half was not a shooting clinic for either side; both teams combined to start the second half 3-of-17 from the floor.
  • Neither side found its footing offensively, combining for just 23 points in the third quarter and leaving Dayton with a 49-35 lead heading into the fourth.

4th Quarter
  • Garcia scored the first five points of the quarter to put Toledo within six, 51-45, with 5:07 to go. An impressive three-point play capped the UT scoring run and appeared to shift momentum to the Rockets.
  • The Flyers responded with a quick 7-0 to reclaim a double-digit lead, making the score 58-45 with 3:35 remaining.
  • Late threes by Lockett and senior Jayda Jansen helped keep UT alive, but the Flyers made their free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
