Â
CANCUN, Mexico – The University of Toledo women's basketball team shot its way to victory on Thursday evening, defeating Idaho State 79-58 in Thanksgiving Day action at the Cancun Challenge.
Â
The Rockets (3-1) shot 51.8 percent from the field on Thursday, making 29-of-56 shots from the floor and connecting on 10-of-19 shots from beyond the arc.
Â
"I'm really proud of our players," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "Quinesha Lockett had a heck of a game, but I really was proud of everybody. Idaho State was an NCAA Tournament team last year, it's not easy to beat a tournament team on the road like this. They run a lot of interesting actions, they throw a lot of motion and random screens at you. Our players had to talk a lot tonight, sometimes we did a good job of talking out there and sometimes we could have done a better job. But overall I'm proud of the way we played."
Â
Junior Quinesha Lockett led the way with a season-high 24 points, her seventh straight game with at least 20 points dating back to last season. Junior Sophia Wiard poured in 14 points and had a game-high eight assists while making all six of her free throw attempts.
Â
Freshman Jessica Cook and sophomore Nan Garcia both added eight points, while Garcia collected a career-high seven rebounds as well. Junior Hannah Noveroske contributed seven points and four rebounds.
Â
UT's defense held Idaho State (1-4)Â to 37.7 percent shooting (23-for-61) and just 18.2 percent shooting from three-point range (4-for-22). The Rockets held a slim lead in the rebound battle, pulling down 37 compared to the Bengals' 33.
Â
Toledo will face Seton Hall on Friday at 4:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live on FloHoops.
