TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo's eight-game win streak against arch-rival Bowling Green came to an end following a 69-57 setback on Saturday at Savage Arena. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 7-4 overall, 3-4 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Falcons (9-3, 5-2 MAC) led wire-to-wire in the "Battle of I-75" to defeat Toledo for the first time since Feb. 2, 2014, a span of almost seven years or 2,540 days.
The story of the matchup was free throws and turnovers. Toledo made 12 charity tosses and had a season-high 25 miscues, while BGSU converted 22 free throws and committed 16 turnovers. The Falcons shot a blistering 88.0 percent (22-of-25) from the free throw line and converted the Rockets' turnovers into 29 points.
Sophomore
Quinesha Lockett paced Toledo with 21 points. The second-year team captain has now scored at least 20 points a squad-best six times this year and seven occasions overall as a collegiate. Two of her 20-plus point efforts have come against rival BGSU.
Senior
Tatyana Davis added a season-high 11 points and a collegiate-best seven rebounds off the bench, while sophomore
Sophia Wiard finished with eight points, seven boards, a career-high eight assists and two steals.
As a team, the Rockets shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the field, including 13.0 percent (3-of-23) from three-point range, and an impressive 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the charity stripe.
Lexi Fleming led Bowling Green with 21 points, followed by Kadie Hempfling with 11. The Falcons also received eight points each from Elissa Brett, Madisen Parker and Angela Perry to stop a mini two-game losing skid. The Falcons also benefited from a game-high 15 caroms by Kenzie Lewis.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons buried back-to-back treys to start the scoring, forcing the Rockets to burn a timeout at the 7:45 mark. Nyla Hampton and Brett each hit shots from beyond the arc following Toledo turnovers in the opening two-plus minutes.
• Lockett and the Rockets responded well following the stoppage in play, ripping off nine points in a span of three-plus minutes to make the score 20-13. The Omaha, Neb. native was credited with four field goals during this span to make it a three-possession difference after the opening 10 minutes.
• BGSU shot 4-of-7 from three-point land in the first period, while Toledo hit only 1-of-6.
SECOND QUARTER
• Bowling Green began the second period the same way it started the game, red-hot shooting the ball. The visitors received four points from Hempfling and three by Fleming to stretch their margin to double figures, 29-17, at the 7:09 mark.
• The Rockets would get as close as six, 29-23, following a three-point field goal from Davis, but BGSU ended the half on a 12-2 run to take a 41-25 halftime lead. BGSU's Parker started and ended the burst with a triple, sandwiched in between by five three throws from Fleming.
• Toledo did not help its own cause down the stretch in the first half and was held without a field goal for the final 4:38, leading to a 16-point deficit at the intermission.
• Lockett, who sat the final eight minutes in the second stanza after picking up her second foul, led Toledo with nine points. Parker and Fleming paced Bowling Green with eight points each.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Rockets came out of the locker room juiced up, scoring the first seven points, 41-32. The big shot in the burst was a traditional three-point play from freshman
Sammi Mikonowicz at the 7:42 mark.
• Toledo continued to fight back, benefiting from a pair of layups by Lockett and one from Wiard to set the score at 51-40 after 30 minutes of competition.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Unfortunately for the Rockets, the closest they would get was 11 points for the remainder of regulation. The Falcons put the game away by hitting all six of their free throws in the waning moments to hand Toledo only its second home loss this year.
UP NEXT
• The Rockets are scheduled to play MAC frontrunner Kent State (5-2, 4-0 MAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 20. The opening tip vs. the Golden Flashes is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the M.A.C. Center.
