Toledo Returns Home to Host WMU on Wednesday

TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo (6-3, 2-3 MAC) will look to continue its outstanding play at home when it hosts Western Michigan (1-6, 0-5 MAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 13. The opening tip against the Broncos is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.
The Rockets have produced a 5-1 (.833) mark in home games in 2020-21 and are 149-48 (.756) in Savage Arena in 12-plus years under Head Coach Tricia Cullop. Â

Toledo and Western Michigan will meet for the first of two matchups this season and 83rd overall. The Rockets will travel to Kalamazoo on Wednesday, March 3 at 1:00 p.m. in University Arena.Â
Toledo leads the all-time series against WMU, 59-23, and has won 11 of the last 13 contests. A year ago, the Broncos swept the regular-season series vs. Toledo, claiming an 84-72 home triumph (Jan. 4) and a 70-58 road win (Feb. 22) to snap the Rockets' 11-game win streak in the series. In addition, the Rockets hold a 30-9 advantage against the Broncos in contests played in Lucas County.Â
Toledo enters Wednesday's action on the heels of an 85-66 loss at Ohio on Saturday in the Convocation Center. Sophomore Quinesha Lockett paced Toledo with 15 points, followed by freshmen Khera Goss and Mickayla Perdue with 11 points each. The Midnight Blue & Gold also received six points, a team-high nine rebounds and three assists from sophomore Sophia Wiard.
The Rockets fell behind early against the Bobcats, trailing 24-13 at the end of the first quarter and 48-25 at halftime. As a team, Toledo shot 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the field, including 19.0 percent (4-of-21) from three-point range, and 78.6 percent (season-high 22-of-28) from the charity stripe.
CeCe Hooks led Ohio (5-3, 3-2 MAC) with a game-high 24 points, while the trio of Caitlyn Kroll, Erica Johnson and Gabby Burris contributed 14, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Ohio did a bulk of its damage from beyond the arc, knocking down 13 three-point field goals to hand Toledo back-to-back losses for the first time this year. Seven different Bobcats hit a three from three-point range, including a contest-best four by Kroll.
Through the first nine contests, Toledo continues to be paced offensively by the quintet of Lockett, Wiard, freshman Sammi Mikonowicz, Goss and sophomore Mali Morgan-Elliott, who account for a whopping 83.6 percent (531 of 635 points) of the Rockets' scoring.
Toledo will battle a Western Michigan team which is coming off a 67-62 home loss against Eastern Michigan (5-5, 2-3 MAC) on Sunday. The Eagles broke open a close game by outscoring the Broncos 40-27 in the second half to hand WMU its sixth-consecutive loss. Sydney Shafer paced Western Michigan with 23 points off the bench, followed closely by Taylor Williams with 20.

WMU, which is 0-4 away from home in 2020-21, possesses a balanced offense with three players contributing at least 10 points led by Reilly Jacobson and Shafer at 13.1 and 11.7 ppg.Â
Following Wednesday's contest, the Rockets will host arch-rival Bowling Green (8-2, 4-1 MAC) on Saturday, Jan. 16. The opening tip vs. the Falcons is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN+. Toledo has won the last eight contests against its rival, outscoring BGSU by 12.9 ppg (73.9-61.0) during the unbeaten stretch.
