Rockets Rally to Earn Split in Day Two of HEB Classic

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Toledo softball team rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Incarnate Word, 5-1, to earn a split on day two of the H.E.B. Classic on Saturday. The Rockets fell to Creighton in the opening game of the day, only to later come back and provide an exciting win against the host school in the evening contest.

Game One
It was a game of catchup from the beginning for the Rockets, as Toledo gave up 20 runs in the first two innings. Junior Maggie McGurk came in relief late in the second inning, holding the Blue Jays to four runs in the remaining three innings.
  • Freshman Leah Munson earned the start at second base for the Rockets going 2-for-3.
  • Junior Rebekah Yenrick scored the Rockets' only run when classmate Raelyn Nyren drove her home with a sacrifice fly.
  • McGurk came in as relief in the second inning after the Rockets had given up 20 runs. She fought kept the Blue Jays scoreless in the third but gave up two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.
  • The game ended after five innings due to a run limit.

Game Two
The Rockets broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the seventh inning. Sophomore Bri Robeson gave the Rockets all the runs they needed with a two-run double. Junior Erin Hunt went the distance for Toledo, allowing just five hits and striking out 11.
  • Toledo and UIW's defenses were strong through the first three innings, as both teams allowed no runs.
  • Senior Morgan Paaverud homered with two strikes in the fourth inning to put the Rockets up 1-0.
  • UIW responded in the sixth with an RBI double that tied the game at 1-1.
  • Sophomore Aubrey Reed led off the seventh with a single, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt followed by senior Samantha Golden.
  • Sophomore Raquel Emery singled up the middle, moving Reed to third.
  • Robeson knocked in both runners with a double to left field, giving Toledo a 3-1 lead.
  • Freshman Leah Munson singled up the middle, sending Robeson home and putting the Rockets up 4-1.
  • Junior Dayna Denner's bat stayed hot, as she ripped a hard double to right-center, bringing Munson home for her seventh RBI of the tournament.
  • Hunt put down Incarnate Word in order in the bottom of the seventh, sealing the Rockets' 5-1 win.
