TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo (5-1, 1-1 MAC) will open up the 2021 calendar year against Akron (3-2, 0-2 MAC) on Saturday, Jan. 2 in Mid-American Conference action at home. The opening tip against the Zips is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.
The Rockets have begun the season winning five of their first six games for the fourth time under 13th-year head coach Tricia Cullop. The Midnight Blue & Gold has now started a season with at least a 5-1 ledger after six contests on 11 occasions in school history.Â
Saturday's matchup will pit Toledo's stingy defense against Akron's high-powered offense. The Rockets are currently fifth in the league in scoring defense (64.50 ppg), sixth in overall field-goal percentage defense (.394, 138-of-350) and second in three-point field-goal percentage defense (.261, 30-of-115), while the Zips are third in scoring (75.80 ppg) and second in both overall field-goal percentage (.437, 141-of-323) and three-point field-goal percentage (.374, 46-of-123).
Toledo and Akron will meet for the first of two games during the regular season and 59th time overall. The Rockets will travel to Akron on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 2:00 p.m. in James A. Rhodes Arena.
Toledo leads the all-time series against Akron, 44-14, and has won five of the last six meetings. The Rockets also hold a commanding 25-4 edge in games played in Lucas County. A year ago, Toledo claimed a 65-61 home triumph during the regular season (Jan. 15). The intrastate rivals then squared off for a second time in the first round of the 2020 MAC Tournament, with the Rockets securing a 67-63 road win (March 9).Â
Toledo, which is 4-1 at home this season, is coming off a 64-49 home triumph against Summit League member North Dakota on Dec. 21. Sophomore Quinesha Lockett paced the Rockets with 23 points vs. the Fighting Hawks, a season-high seven boards and three assists. Freshman Sammi Mikonowicz added a season-high 16 points, five caroms and a season-tying best three thefts. They also benefited from eight points each from sophomore Sophia Wiard and freshman Khera Goss to run its record to 11-2 in non-conference finales under Coach Cullop.
As a team, Toledo shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field in its non-league finale, including 34.4 percent (11-of-32) from three-point land, and a flawless 9-of-9 from the free throw line. They have now made double-digit triples in two of the last four games. The Rockets also finished with 15 assists and only 12 turnovers, signifying the second time they had more helpers than miscues this year.Â
Through the first six contests, Toledo continues to be paced offensively by the quintet of Lockett, Wiard, Mikonowicz, sophomore Mali Morgan-Elliott and Goss, who are averaging 19.0, 17.8, 10.2, 7.0 and 6.3 ppg, respectively. This group accounts for a whopping 85.0 percent (362 of 426 points) of the Rockets' scoring.
Toledo will square off against an Akron squad which is coming off back-to-back conference losses to Buffalo, 85-77, on Dec. 13 and most recently Ball State, 67-60, on Dec. 20. Jordyn Dawson led four Zips scoring in double figures with 15 points against the Cardinals, to go along with eight boards and six helpers, followed closely by the trio of Emma Tecca, Lonasia Brewer and Gabrielle Brown-Mitchell with 12, 10 and 10 points, respectively.
UA, which is 1-1 away from home in 2020-21, utilizes a balanced offense with five players contributing at least 7.0 ppg led by Dawson's 19.8 ppg and 9.0 rpg.
Following Saturday's contest against the Zips, the Rockets will travel to Ball State (3-3, 1-1 MAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 6. The opening tip against the Cardinals is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
