Rockets Blast Off to 96-87 Overtime Win at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Senior Marreon Jackson exploded for 14 points in overtime to lead Toledo to a 96-87 overtime victory on Wednesday evening over previously unbeaten Marshall. The victory over the Thundering Herd (4-1) improved the Rockets' record to 5-3 and was their fourth straight win in the series between the two schools.

Toledo held an 80-70 lead with four minutes remaining in regulation but the hosts ended the game with a 10-0 run. Jackson then hit two three-pointers to open the extra session to propel the Rockets to the nine-point victory.

"This was a big win against a team that has been playing really well," said Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk. "We played some really good basketball throughout but had a couple of bad stretches and obviously didn't end the game in regulation the right way. I'm proud of our effort and that nobody panicked."

Jackson finished the contest with 23 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals. He was joined in double-digits by freshman Ryan Rollins (16 pts.), junior Setric Millner Jr. (15 pts.) and junior JT Shumate (12 pts.).

"I haven't been playing like I know I can," Jackson said. "I've been just staying at it. Teams have been pressuring me but I knew it was going to come eventually. I haven't played my best game yet, but the coaching staff has kept trusting because I've been through the fires and know what to expect."

Rollins also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds and Shumate collected eight to help the Rockets dominate the glass by a 48-37 margin. Shumate was playing his first game as a Rocket after the NCAA granted immediate eligibility to all transfers earlier today.

Toledo shot 45.3 percent from the field, 10-of-30 (33.3 percent) and 18-of-23 (78.3 percent) at the free-throw line. Marshall posted similar numbers with a 44.9 shooting, mark, 32.4 three-point FG% (11-of-34) and 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) from the charity stripe.

Junior Taevion Kinsey paced the Thundering Herd with 20 points.

The Rockets return to action on Saturday, Dec. 19 with their final non-conference contest vs. Missouri Valley Conference member Valparaiso. Tip-off time is set for 2:00 p.m. on ESPN3.
