TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo (3-0, 1-0 MAC) will look to remain unbeaten when it hosts Kent State (1-2, 1-0 MAC) on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+. The Rockets have begun the season with three-consecutive wins for the fifth time in program history.Â
Tomorrow's contest will pit Toledo's stingy perimeter defense against Kent State's lethal outside shooting. The Rockets are currently tied for fourth in the MAC in three-point field-goals allowed per contest (5.7) and fifth in three-point field-goal percentage defense (.279), while KSU is fifth (8.7) and fourth (.371) in the same categories.
Toledo and Kent State will meet for the first of matchups during the regular season and 77th time overall. The Rockets will travel to KSU on Wednesday, Jan. 20 in the MAC Center on ESPN+.
A year ago, the teams split their two meetings with the home squad emerging victorious each time. The Rockets secured a 69-60 triumph against the Golden Flashes in Savage Arena (Feb. 1) and suffered an 87-68 setback in the MAC Center (Feb. 15).
Toledo leads the all-time series vs. KSU, 43-33, but it has lost five of the last seven overall. The Rockets also hold a 21-12 edge in contests played in the "Glass City" and have won six of the last eight meetings vs. KSU on their home court.
The Midnight Blue & Gold is coming off a thrilling 82-79 road triumph at Northern Illinois (2-2, 0-1 MAC) on Thursday. Sophomore Sophia Wiard tied the school's single-game scoring record with 42 points. Wiard matched the record previously set by Kim Sekulski, who scored 42 points against arch-rival Bowling Green on Feb. 20, 1991.
A team captain, Wiard shot a sensational 16-of-25 from the field against the Huskies, including a blistering 7-of-10 from the three-point line, and a perfect 3-of-3 from the charity stripe. Along with her offensive explosion, the Muskegon, Mich. native registered five rebounds, a game-high five assists, a contest-tying best three steals and two blocks.
Classmates Quinesha Lockett and Mali Morgan-Elliott also contributed double figures on the road, finishing with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Morgan-Elliott did all of her damage with the game on the line in the fourth quarter, helping Toledo snap NIU's two-game win streak.
As a team, Toledo shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69) from the field, including a stellar 40.0 percent (12-of-30) from three-point land, and a near perfect 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the charity stripe. The Rockets also finished with 19 assists, a season-low eight turnovers, and a season-best 13 thefts.
Through the first three games this season, Toledo is fueled offensively by the quartet of Wiard, Lockett, freshman Sammi Mikonowicz and freshman Khera Goss, who are averaging 23.7, 18.0, 10.0 and 7.0 ppg, respectively. This group accounts for a whopping 84.6 percent (193 of 228 points) of the Rockets' scoring.
KSU, which will be playing its third game in the last five days, enter tomorrow's matchup on the heels of an 84-80 home victory against Ohio on Friday. The Golden Flashes made a program-record 16 three-point field goals against the Bobcats to help them record their first victory this season.
Kent State shot an impressive 16-of-28 from long range for the game, with five players contributing multiple conversions. Katie Shumate, whose brother JT is a junior on the Toledo Men's Basketball Team, led the way with 18 points, followed closely by Mariah Modkins with a career-high 15 points and eight assists. Casey Santoro and Clare Kelly added 14 points each and Nila Blackford registered a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The Golden Flashes feature a balanced offense with four players averaging at least 9.0 points per game paced by the trio of Blackford, Thall and Modkins at 11.3, 11.0 and 10.7 ppg, respectively.
Following tomorrow's game, the Rockets will host Atlantic 10 member Duquesne (2-1) on Friday, Dec. 18 at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+.Â
