Rockets Host Youngstown State, Marshall in Home Opener

TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Toledo women's tennis team is set to host Youngstown State on Saturday and Marshall on Sunday. Both matches will be held at Twos Athletic Club in Toledo at 1:00 p.m. 
 
Last Time Out
The Rockets were last in action in the fall at the ITA Midwest Regional in East Lansing, Mich. Junior Patricia Panta, senior Dee Dee Leenabanchong, and freshman Sloane Teske posted wins in the first round of the singles qualifiers. Teske earned a three-set victory over Michigan's Lera Patiuk (7-5, 5-7, 6-2). All three were knocked from the bracket in the following round. In doubles action, Leenabanchong and sophomore Eileen Carney came back from a 5-0 deficit against Valparaiso's Olivia Czerwonka/Demi Jhaveri to win 8-5 before falling in the second round.
 
Last Time Against Youngstown State
Toledo edged out the Penguins with a 4-3 victory in Youngstown, Ohio, on Feb. 15 last season. The Rockets dropped the doubles point early, with Leenabanchong and Kiersten Carlson posting the only doubles victory at 6-4 on the No. 1 court. In singles action, Carlson picked up a two-set win on the No. 5 court while Christina Fuller won by default on the No. 4 court. On the No. 1 and No. 6 courts Dee Dee Leenabanchong and Claire Aleck locked into three-set battles, both emerging victorious and securing the Rockets' win. 
 
Scouting Youngstown State
The Penguins open play against Bowling Green on Jan. 24, prior to their match against Toledo on Saturday. 
 
Junior Lucia Zagar went 10-9 (5-2 Horizon League) in dual match play last season, splitting her time between the No. 4, 5, and 6 courts. Zagar posted a 6-12 (3-3 Horizon League) record in doubles, primarily from the No. 2 court.  Also returning for the Penguins is junior Tamara Teufl, who went 11-12 (5-3 Horizon League) in singles, primarily from the No. 2 court. In doubles, Teufl went 9-12 (6-1 Horizon League) from the No. 1 court. 
 
Youngstown State went 6-18 (3-6 Horizon League) last season. The Penguins notched 7-0 sweeps over Dayton and Green Bay and edged out UTEP and UIC 4-3. YSU ended their season on a high note, defeating IUPUI 5-2. 
 
Last Time Against Marshall
Toledo met Marshall at the Thunder in the Mountains tournament in the fall. Fuller/Teske and Laura Morera/Panta picked up wins in doubles play. Fuller was the sole Rocket to earn a singles victory against the Herd, defeating Kara Joseph 6-3, 6-1. 
 
Scouting Marshall
The Herd competed at the MLK Invitational, hosted by Indiana, Jan. 18-20. Marshall tallied nine singles victories and nine doubles victories on the weekend. The Herd opens dual match play with a doubleheader against Wright State and Dayton on Jan. 25 in Dayton, Ohio before clashing against Toledo on Jan. 26. 
 
Junior Anna Smith returns for The Herd, after going 12-8 (3-3 CUSA) in singles last season, primarily from the No. 1 court. On the doubles court, Smith posted an 8-8 (2-3 CUSA) record, splitting time on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts. Sophomore Madi Ballow also returns, posting an 11-11 (4-2 CUSA) record in singles, splitting her time on the No. 4 and No. 5 courts. Ballow went 5-12 (2-3 CUSA) in doubles primarily from the No. 2 court. 
 
Last season The Herd went 6-16 (2-4 CUSA). Marshall posted 7-0 sweeps of West Virginia State, New Orleans, and Charleston (W.Va.). The Herd defeated Wright State, 5-2, in non-conference play, and posted conference wins over Middle Tennessee (4-3) and UAB (6-1). Marshall, seeded No. 11, fell to No. 6 seeded Charlotte 4-0 in the first round of the Conference USA Championships.
