CHARLESTON, W. Va. - The Toledo women's tennis team wrapped up day one at the Thunder in the Mountains tournament in Charleston, W. Va,  with commanding performances on the doubles court. 
 
"We took huge steps forward today in doubles and I'm extremely proud of how tough the women played," said head coach Tracy Mauntler. "We saw some things that we need to work on in singles and I expect them to make adjustments tomorrow." 
 
To kick off doubles action, the Rockets faced Marshall, where sophomore Christina Fuller and freshman Sloane Teske defeated the Herd's Liz Stefancic/Jutte Van Hansewyck, 6-2. Freshman Laura Morera and junior Patricia Panta notched a 6-4 victory over Madi Ballow/Kara Joseph. 
 
The Rockets then met up with Mid-American Conference foe Akron on the doubles court. Sophomore Eileen Carney and senior Dee Dee Leenabanchong posted a 6-3 victory over Miruna Vasilescu and Fuller/Teske defeated Anna Uljanov/Aliona Kruglov, 6-3. 
 
Toledo faced more challenges in singles play, as they clashed with James Madison University. Graduate student Zina Mehikic was the only Rocket to garner a win, downing Shannon McCarthy, 6-1, 6-3. 
 
The Rockets will resume play tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. as they face JMU in doubles action.
