Toledo Splits Saturday Matches at Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio— The University of Toledo women's volleyball team ended its weekend by splitting a pair of matches on Saturday. The Rockets defeated Indiana State in three sets before falling to Wright State in three sets as well.

The loss to the Raiders snapped a six-match winning streak for Toledo, its longest winning streak since 2013.

In the win over the Sycamores, senior Zoe Birnbrich and junior Chloee Kleespies were excellent offensively. Both tallied 16 kills in the winning effort, with Birnbrich hitting .625 and Kleespies hitting .421. Sophomore Megan Beasley added 38 assists, while freshman Ryann Jaqua had a team-best 15 digs.

Birnbrich and Kleespies were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Kleespies had a team-high 12 kills in the loss to Wright State. Megan Beasley was credited with 32 assists and Neal led the team with 23 digs.

Several Toledo players had excellent weekends statistically. Kleespies averaged 4.56 kills/set and hit .346; Birnbrich added 3.44 kills/set and 1.11 blocks/set while hitting .385; Megan Beasley registered 11.7 assists/set; and junior Rhyen Neal recorded 4.89 digs/set.

The Rockets' final non-conference tournament of the season will be next weekend. Toledo will visit Memphis to play the Tigers as well as Southeast Missouri and North Alabama.

Toledo 3, Indiana State 0

Set 1 (Toledo, 25-16)
The Rockets dominated in the first set, winning 25-16 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Their .484 hitting percentage was their highest single-set percentage so far this season. Birnbrich and Kleespies were terrific, combining to hit. 722 and tally 13 of Toledo's 17 kills. Megan Beasley assisted on 16 of UT's terminations.

Set 2 (Toledo, 25-23)
Birnbrich and Kleespies were excellent once again in the second set, combining for another 13 kills. The Sycamores held the lead as late as 16-15, but the Rockets scored four in a row to take a 19-16 advantage. Indiana State made it interesting in the final moments of the second set by pulling within one, 24-23, but a kill off the hand of Birnbrich sealed the deal for Toledo.

Set 3 (Toledo, 25-16)
The Sycamores hung around for a bit in the third set, even leading as late as 13-12. But the Rockets were able to score 13 of the final 16 points to cruise to a 25-16 win in the third set and their sixth straight victory overall. Jaqua was all over the court, registering 10 digs in the final set.
 
Wright State 3, Toledo 0

Set 1 (Wright State, 25-23)
Toledo jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first set, but the Raiders were able to quickly tie the score at 10-10. The two squads fought to 13 tie scores in the first frame alone, which ended up coming down to the wire. With WSU leading, 23-22, freshman Olivia Vance tallied a kill to knot the score at 23-23. The Raiders were able to score the final two points of the set, though to win 25-23.

Set 2 (Wright State, 25-20)
Wright State came out on top in the second set, 25-20, to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The last point at which Toledo had a lead was 8-7, but from that point on the Raiders controlled the set and kept themselves in front of the Rockets. Wright State's Celia Powers had eight kills in the second frame.

Set 3 (Wright State, 27-25)
Toledo nearly pushed the match to a fourth set, narrowly losing in the third frame, 27-25. The Rockets quickly doubled up the Raiders, putting the score at 12-6 thanks to a kill from Kleespies. Wright State was able to fight back and tie the score at 17-17, and from that point on it was neck-and-neck until the very end. Trailing 24-22, Toledo scored twice to make the ledger even. Facing another match point, the Rockets tied the score at 25-25, but would not get any closer. Wright State scored twice to win the third set, 27-25, and win the match.
