Rockets Muzzle Raiders 4-3 in Monday Showdown

Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo softball team (13-20, 4-4 MAC) tamed the Wright State Raiders (15-24, 3-9 Horizon) today in a 4-3 victory at Scott Park. Senior pitcher Kailey Minarchick led UT to victory in her first complete game of the season, and sophomore Raelyn Nyren had an impressive day at the plate as she scored two runs and drove in another.

How it happened:
  • Toledo opened scoring for the fourth-straight game, putting up a trio of runs in the second inning. Sophomore Brittney Davis came home on a passed ball, Nyren singled to right to score junior Samantha Golden, and sophomore Ami Ill hit a deep centerfield single that allowed Nyren to come in.
  • The Rockets kept the shutout going until the fourth when the Raiders' Madison Nunez hit a bases-loaded RBI groundout to score one. Two WSU runners were left on the bags though as UT's defense recorded the final out two pitches later on a first base grounder.
  • UT's fourth run scored in the bottom of the fourth frame on an RBI single by freshman Aubrey Reed that allowed Nyren to run in from second and put UT up 4-1.
  • Wright State kept Toledo on its toes in the sixth as the Hunter Green and Gold came within one after an RBI single followed by a successful double steal that cut UT's lead to 4-3.
  • The Rockets survived a Raider rally in the seventh as Toledo worked three groundouts that left two Wright State runners stranded to close out the game.
