Rockets Gear Up for I-75 Dual Meet

Toledo, Ohio - The University of Toledo women's track and field team is set to host Bowling Green for the BGSU dual meet on Friday. Field events begin at 1:00 p.m. with the women's hammer throw followed by the discus. Track events begin at 3:30 p.m. with the women's 2,000-meter steeplechase. A senior recognition presentation is slated for 4:15 p.m.
 
The Rockets opened the outdoor season with 11 top-10 finishes, nine personal bests, and four MAC automatic qualifying times at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. last Friday and Saturday. During the first day of competition, junior Athena Welsh broke UT's record for the 5000m, posting a 15:58.95 to become the first Rocket to surpass the 16-minute mark. Seniors Petronela Simiuc and Janelle Noe registered personal bests and MAC automatic qualifying times of 2:08.27 and 2:09.48, respectively,  in the 800m and Simiuc notched a MAC qualifying time of 4:20.22 in the 1500m. In the 100m, seniors Shanice Williams and Nautica Hill placed second and third, clocking times of 11.90 and 11.95.
 
In the field events, sophomore Janell Rowe placed sixth with a personal-best leap of 11.99m. Senior Katie Dewey placed ninth in the shot put (14.30m) and discus (45.43m).
 
Last Time at the BGSU Dual Meet
In last season's Battle of I-75 meet, the Rockets tied with the Falcons at 96 points each. UT garnered 10 first-place finishes. Toledo had a five-point lead for most of the day until the 200m where BG took the top three spots, moving ahead in team scoring totals. The meet came down to the 4x400m relay, where Kennedey Glover, Christina Johnson, Danda da Silva, and Yana Khabina finished well ahead of the Falcons, clocking a time of 3:56.43.
