Rockets Venture to Buffalo for MAC Tournament

Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's tennis team (11-9, 3-4 MAC) earned a No. 5 seed in the Mid-American Conference tournament and will open play in the quarterfinal round with a 10:00 a.m. match against No. 4 seeded Ball State on Friday in Buffalo, N.Y.Â

The Rockets enter the tournament after defeating the defending champion Buffalo, 4-3, in the regular season finale. Junior Dee Dee Leenabanchong and senior Kokoro Chishaki as well as senior Thalita Rodrigues and freshman Kiersten Carlson earned 6-3 victories on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts to secure the doubles point.Â

Toledo tallied its remaining three points after three-set victories on the No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 courts, with wins from Chishaki, freshman Christina Fuller  and Rodrigues, respectively. Fuller clinched the match after fighting for a five-point comeback in her second and third sets.Â

Toledo, Buffalo, and Bowling Green ended the regular season in a three-way tie for fifth place with 3-4 conference records. Tiebreakers gave the Rockets the No. 5 seed and Buffalo the No. 6 seed, with Bowling Green failing to make the tournament.

The Cardinals are 15-5 overall (4-3 MAC), ending the season with a 4-3 loss to Akron. BSU posted sweeps of Toledo, Buffalo, and Northern Illinois and posted losses against Western Michigan and Miami.Â

Peyton Gollhofer leads the Cards with a 15-1 dual match record, playing primarily from the No. 3 spot. Gollhofer has gone undefeated in MAC singles play and holds a 14-3 (4-1 MAC) doubles record at the No. 3 position. Following Gollhofer is Rebecca Herrington, who has a 15-2 dual match record on primarily the No. 4 court. Herrington has also gone undefeated in MAC singles play and has posted a 16-6 (3-2) doubles record split between the No. 1 and No. 2 courts.Â

A Look at the MAC Tournament FieldÂ
Miami was crowned regular season champions and earned the No. 1 seed after going 10-10 overall and 6-1 in MAC play. The RedHawks' only conference loss came from Akron, 4-3 and Miami enters the tournament off a seven-match win streak.Â

Akron took the No. 2 seed after going 20-5 (5-2 MAC). The Zips enter the tournament on a two-match win streak and their only conference losses came at the hands of Toledo and Western Michigan with scores of 4-3 each.Â

No. 3 seed Western Michigan posted a 12-10 record (4-3 MAC) on the season and will open tournament play on a two-match losing streak. The Broncos fell to Buffalo, Miami, and Bowling Green.Â

Taking the No. 6 seed is Buffalo. UB finished the season 14-7 (3-4 MAC). Â The Bulls snagged the last spot in the tournament after falling 4-3 to Toledo in the season finale match.Â
