Toledo Posts Runner-Up Finish at MAC Championships

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – Junior Saranlak Tumfong posted a runner-up finish on Sunday at the Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships to help the University of Toledo to its fifth second-place showing in the last seven seasons in the tournament.

The Rockets finished the 54-hole tournament at the par-72, 6,025-yard Purgatory Golf Club at 11-over par 875, three shots shy of the school record posted at the 2016 MAC Championships. No. 10 Kent State won the tournament for the 21st straight year with a seven-under par 857.

"I am extremely proud of the patience, commitment and resiliency these ladies showed all weekend long and all season long," Head Coach Jenny Coluccio said. "This weekend was a challenging situation with stops and starts and abnormal plans, but they were flexible and took everything in stride. Today was everything we have been building toward all season. While we were outraced by a very strong Kent team, they continued to stay committed and gave it everything they had!"

Tumfong carded a career-low three-under 213 (74-70-69) en route to a second-place standing that was the best of her collegiate career. After posting a two-over 74 in cold, windy conditions on Friday, she fired rounds of 70 and 69 today to be just one of three golfers to finish under par.

"Saranlak was on in every part of her game today," Coluccio said. "Her mentality and patience were completely under control. She never wavered from the plan and continued to trust herself completely. Her process took some learning curves this season, but after all the frustrating rounds she has experienced she was finally able to put it all together today."

Joining Tumfong in the Top 10 were seniors Pimchanok Kawil (T-5th/75-72-72=219) and Pinyada Kuvanun (T-9th/78-71-74=223). Rounding out the Rocket lineup were senior Natcha Daengpiem (T-11th/76-75-73=224) and junior Thunpijja Sukkasem (T-16th/82-74-71=227).

The performances by Tumfong and Kawil earned the duo a spot on the MAC's All-Tournament Team.  Earlier in the day, Kuvanun received first-team All-MAC honors, while Kawil was named to the second-team All-MAC squad.

Toledo entered the day with a two-shot advantage over Kent State and played the final 36 holes at four-under par. That was good enough to finish 21 shots ahead of third-place Northern Illinois but not enough to keep pace with the red-hot Golden Flashes' 24-under par total today.
