Toledo Drops Two Against Central Michigan on Sunday

Toledo, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team dropped both games of its Sunday doubleheader with Central Michigan, falling 7-1 in game one and 18-3 in game two. Both games were played at Mercy Field.

The Rockets were unable to overcome a potent CMU offensive attack on Sunday. Game one was close until a four-run seventh inning for the Chippewas put the game out of reach for UT. Game two was all CMU from the get-go, and 12 runs over the final four innings put an emphatic end to the weekend series for Central Michigan.

Next up for the Rockets are a pair of non-conference midweek games. A Tuesday contest at Dayton will be followed by a Wednesday game at Michigan State.

Game One: Central Michigan 7, Toledo 1

It was a 2-1 game entering the sixth inning, but CMU scored one in the top of the sixth and four in the seventh to close the door on the Rockets. Sophomore Chris Meyers drove in the only run of the game for Toledo, mashing a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, his fourth homer of the season. Junior Layne Schnitz-Paxton started the game for Toledo and threw six innings. Sophomore Bryce Davis and freshman Jamie Myers combined for 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

How it Happened
  • Two RBI groundouts in the top of the third game Central Michigan a 2-0 lead.
  • Meyers' one-out dinger in the bottom of the fifth got the Rockets on the board and put them within one, 2-1.
  • A bases-loaded walk for the Chippewas in the sixth negated the home run and put UT behind by two again, 3-1.
  • Central Michigan scored four in the top of the seventh to take a 7-1 lead that would hold as the final score. Three of the four runs came via Toledo pitching miscues: a bases-loaded walk, a wild pitch, and a passed ball all allowed runs to score.

Game Two: Central Michigan 18, Toledo 3

The Chippewas scored three runs in the top of the first and 12 over the final four innings in a dominant performance to capture the weekend series. Sophomore Zach Schwartzenberger hit his first home run of the season and drove in two runs, while fellow sophomores Trace Hatfield and John Servello, as well as freshman Darryn Davis, all tallied two hits. Five pitchers saw time for Toledo, including freshman Jeff Dunsmore who struck out two in his one inning of work.

How it Happened
  • Two RBI singles and a squeeze bunt brought home runs for Central Michigan in the top of the first to put Toledo in a 3-0 hole before it had a chance to bat.
  • Schwartzenberger's first home run of the season led off the bottom of the second.
  • A two-run homer in the top of the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth made the score 6-1 through four innings.
  • CMU's offense tallied six runs in the top of the sixth to take a commanding 12-1 lead. An RBI single got things going, then a wild pitch and bases-loaded balk brought in runs as well. A two-out, bases-clearing double brought in three runs and capped the most productive offensive inning of the weekend for the Chippewas.
  • Schwartzenberger drove in his second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double, making the score 12-2.
  • Central Michigan added one run in the seventh, one in the eighth, and one in the ninth to bring its tally to 18, the most by an opponent against the Rockets this season.
  • Freshman Thomas Eitniear walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth to bring home the last run of the weekend for Toledo.
