Muncie, Ind. - The Toledo softball team split day one of its three-game series with Ball State, falling 4-2 in game one but rallying for a 5-2 victory in the nightcap. Sophomore pitcher
Maggie McGurk recorded her sixth win of the season, while junior
Morgan Paaverud stood out too as she went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and three walks between both games.
The Rockets' streak of scoring first extended to an even 10 games in the first contest thanks to senior
Kaitlyn Bergman, but the streak was snapped as the Cardinals put a run on the board first in the second game.
How it Happened:
Game 1
Senior
Megan Choate broke her individual season walk record today as she earned two free bases on balls. Her 25 free bags this year rank ninth all-time at UT.
- The Rockets put a run on the board first as Bergman singled in the third inning to bring in Choate. The scoring play was followed by a walk from sophomore Bekah Yenrick but all three were left on the bags as junior Samantha Golden lined out to center.
- Ball State responded in the bottom of the inning thanks to a solo homer from Janae Hogg. BSU then took the lead as Kendall Fields singled through the left side with two on. Fields then homered in her next at-bat in the fifth to give her team a 3-1 lead.
- Toledo put a second run up in the top of the sixth frame thanks to freshman Aubrey Reed. With Yenrick on second, Reed doubled down the left-field line to bring in her teammate and make it 3-2 BSU. Reed was left on the bases though as three of the Rockets' next four batters grounded out.
- The Cardinals put a final staple in game one thanks to Olivia Huffman, who hit a leadoff homer in the sixth to push BSU's lead to 4-2.
- Try as the Rockets' might, they couldn't force a late-inning rally and ultimately fell 4-2, leaving two runners on the bases in the seventh.

Game 2:
Toledo's second game of the day was a complete team victory ats the Midnight Blue and Gold struck out nine, put up five runs on six hits, and forced BSU to leave 12 runners on the bases. Game two was also just the second time McGurk hasn't walked a batter while throwing at least three innings this year, a feat only matched by sophomore
Erin Hunt who has accomplished it twice.
- Toledo opened with a walk from Norwood but the next three went down in order to bring up BSU's batters.
- Toledo's Hunt gave up a run in the first inning on a HBP and three walks before striking out three straight batters.
- Scoring chances were plentiful in the third inning for both sides as Toledo put two on but couldn't bring them in and the Cardinals once again loaded the bases before the third out was recorded.
- The Rockets finally got on the board in the fourth thanks to Paaverud, who hit a dinger to right-center to score Yenrick and Bergman and give Toledo its first lead of the day.
- After McGurk registered three Ks of her own in the fourth, Toledo added an insurance run in the fifth thanks to senior Katie Cozy whose double down the right-field line brought around Choate from first, making the score 4-1.
- BSU manufactured a second run in the fifth when a single, two grounders, and a HBP put runners in the corners for Trinity Eckerty. Eckerty then popped a single into shallow center to score one and cut Toledo's lead to just two (4-2).
- After going down 1-2-3 in the sixth, the Midnight Blue and Gold rebounded in the seventh by adding in its final run of the day as Choate doubled to left with one on to make it 5-2. A final strikeout from McGurk combined with two pop-ups ended the day to set up the series rubber match.
