Game Recap: Softball |

Rockets Go Winless On Day 2 of USF Showcase

Clearwater, Fla. - The Toledo softball team fell against Colgate, 1-0, and Saint Jospeh's, 8-5, today on day two of the USF Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. The Rockets had solid chances to win in both games but late-game rallies from the Raiders and Hawks stunned UT.

Game 1
  • Toledo and Colgate both had issues getting going early in the game. UT opened with two fly outs and a caught stealing, while the Raiders went down in order to close the first. Colgate started to build into a scoring chance in the second when two batters got on but some smart defense ended the chance.
  • The game largely settled into a lull from there until the the sixth when Colgate's Virginia Irby hit a homer off sophomore pitcher Erin Hunt to put the Raiders up 1-0. The chance would prove to be enough as UT was unable to respond in the seventh despite earning a walk and a single to put two on.

Game 2
Toledo started off on a tear in game two and was cruising without a worry for the first four innings before the game started to get away. A big seventh inning brought the Hawks back into it, and misfire after misfire from the Midnight Blue and Gold gave SJU the win.
  • The Rockets opened with a single, help from two errors, and a questionable fielder's choice that put three on the board for UT. Toledo added two more in the second when sophomore Kylie Norwood hit a right field home run while freshman Raquel Emery was sitting on first.
  • SJU earned its first run in the third when a double from Jancarla Herrera and a fly out from Amanda Kulp brought one in to make things 5-1.
  • Toledo kept pushing into the bottom of the third but SJU's defense finally settled the boat and stranded two UT runners.
  • The Hawks' second score came in the fourth when back-to-back singles and a first base grounder gave Colgate's runners just enough room to come home and make it 5-2 UT.
  • Toledo retook command through the next innings until the flood gates opened up in the top of the seventh. With two runners on, Sarah Ostaszewski doubled to bring in two and make the score 5-4. The tying run came from another double, this time from Molly Kapala who brought in Ostaszewski.
  • Two flyouts and a line out in the bottom of the frame left one on for Toledo and set SJU up for the win.
  • With a runner starting the eighth on second, SJU hit a single that was bobbled by Norwood and allowed the runner to score and move the batter to second. Another E6 allowed a second scorer to come in, and a final E6 followed to bring in the last runner to set the score at 8-5 SJU.
