Rockets Launch Outdoor Season at Raleigh Relays

Toledo, Ohio - The University of Toledo women's track and field team will be traveling to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University. The meet will start on Friday, March 29 and will run through Saturday, March 30.

Nineteen Rockets will be competing in the relays with 11 making a return from last season.

Leading Toledo in sprints will be seniors Shanice Williams, Christina Johnson, and Nautica Hill. Hill and Williams will be competing in the 100m, 200m, and 4x200m. Johnson will be joining Hill and Williams for the 100m and 4x200m relay. Freshman Rayna Horner will be covering the 400m, 400-meter hurdles, as well as running a leg in the 4x200m relay.

Middle-distance runners Janelle Noe and Petronela Simiuc will be competing in the 1500m and 800m.

Junior Amanda Bakley and senior Olivia Chinn are set for the 3000-meter steeplechase and freshman Rebecca Snyder and junior Athena Welsh will take on the 5000 meters. Senior Jennifer Lichter, junior Stephanie Sherman and freshman Claire Steigerwald are ready to compete in the 10,000 meters to close out Friday's competition.

Leading the Rockets in throws will be senior Katie Dewey, who is set for the shot put and discus events. Joining Dewey for the shot put will be classmate Sally Frank.

For jumps, junior Atalia Lima and freshman Julia Smith will be competing in the high jump, while sophomore Janell Rowe and senior Deja Martin compete in the long jump. Rowe will also be competing in Saturday's triple jump.

Track events are scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. on Friday with the first section of the women's 5000m. Field events will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the men's discus, women's shot put, and women's high jump. Saturday's track events are slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. with the men's 10,000 meters and field events will begin at 9:45 a.m. with the women's hammer throw. Last Time at the Raleigh Relays
UT started the 2017-18 season strong, sending 24 athletes to Raleigh. The Rockets posted six top-five finishes, seven MAC automatic qualifying times, and 15 personal-bests on the weekend. During the first day of competition, Williams took second in the 100m, clocking a time of 11.74 while Welsh recorded a time of 10:22.70 to place fifth in the steeplechase. Day two brought three top-five finishes. Yana Khabina took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.01 and Hill took second in the 200-meters with a time of 24.45. The 4x100m relay team of Williams, Hill, Christina Johnson, and Tori Thompson posted a time of 46.63 to place fifth.
