Toledo Opens MAC Play With 5-2 Win Over NIU

Rockford, Ill. - The Toledo women's tennis team opened Mid-American Conference action with a 5-2 victory over Northern Illinois in Rockford, Ill. on Friday.

"This was such a great team win on the road," said head coach Tracy Mauntler. "We haven't beaten Northern Illinois at their place since 2012, so this was a big win. I'm proud of the tone we set in doubles and just carried it through to singles."

The Rockets picked up the doubles point with 6-3 wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts from junior Dee Dee Leenabanchong/senior Kokoro Chishaki and freshman Kiersten Carlson/senior Thalita Rodrigues. Senior Claire Aleck and freshman Christina Fuller's match was left unfinished 4-4 on the No. 3 court.

In singles action, the Rockets posted four two-set victories. Leenabanchong defeated Jovana Peric, 6-2, 6-1, on the No. 1 court while Fuller defeated Paula Veyhle 6-4, 6-3. Rodrigues defeated Christy Robinson 6-2, 6-3 and Aleck claimed a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Fernanda Naves.

The Rockets are set to host Ball State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The match is scheduled to be at the UT Varsity Courts and will be moved to Twos Athletic Club in the event of inclement weather.

Sunday's match against Ball State will also be available on a tape-delayed basis on ESPN+ and BCSN. In the event the match is moved to Twos Athletic Club, the match will not be broadcasted.
