Toledo Travels to “Motor City” to Take On Detroit Mercy

DETROIT, Mich. – Toledo (2-5) will return its focus to the hardwood after wrapping up fall semester exams when it travels to Horizon League member Detroit Mercy (0-9) on Saturday, Dec. 14. The opening tip against the Titans is slated for Noon in Calihan Hall and will be televised on ESPN+.
Saturday's non-league matchup will precede the Rocket men's contest against UDM which is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
The Rockets, who are in the midst a season-long four-game road swing, are coming off a 79-74 setback at Atlantic 10 member Duquesne last Saturday in the Kerr Fitness Center on the campus of La Roche University.
The Midnight Blue & Gold trailed by 14 points, 66-52, with 7:55 left in regulation before going on a 19-6 run to make the score 72-71 at the 1:35 mark.
Toledo had a chance to take its first lead since the opening minutes on its ensuing possession, but the Rockets were guilty of a turnover.
The Dukes retaliated with free throws, while Toledo missed its next shot and had another miscue to essentially end any hopes of a comeback.
Junior Nakiah Black paced Toledo with a season-high 20 points, followed by senior Mariella Santucci, freshman Soleil Barnes and junior Tanaya Beacham with 13, a season-high 10 and nine points, respectively.
Black converted an efficient 7-of-11 shots from the field in a season-best 37 minutes, including 2-of-4 from three-point land, and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe to surpass the 20-point plateau for the fourth time as a Rocket. A two-time team captain, Black narrowly missed posting her first-collegiate double-double, pulling down a team-high seven boards.
Toledo, which is 1-2 away from home, continues to be fueled offensively by the quartet of Black, Santucci, junior Tatyana Davis and Beacham, who are averaging 10.4, 8.9, 8.6 and 7.4 ppg, respectively.
The Rockets will battle a winless Detroit Mercy team, who most recently dropped a 77-58 home decision against Valparaiso on Dec. 5.
Zoey Oatis paced three Titans in double figures with 14 points against the Crusaders, while Markyia McCormick and Maxine Moore had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
