Toledo Drops 83-76 Home Decision to Memphis

TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo women's basketball suffered an 83-76 loss against Memphis on Sunday before 3,768 fans in Savage Arena. With the setback, the Rockets fall to 1-3 on the season.

Junior Nakiah Black paced Toledo with a season-high 18 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. Black buried a season-best three three-point field goals in the final 10 minutes to reach double figures for a second time this year.

Classmate Tatyana Davis added a collegiate-best 17 points, while making her second-career start. Davis' previous-best effort was 13 points on two occasions, most recently vs. Dayton on Nov. 9.

As a team, the Rockets shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the floor, including a season-high 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from three-point land, and 64.0 percent (16-of-25) from the free throw line.

Madison Griggs led four Tigers (3-3) in double figures with a career-high 24 points on the heels of a collegiate-best eight triples. Griggs shot an eye-popping 8-of-10 from beyond the arc in 35 minutes off the bench.

A member of the American Athletic Conference (AAC), Memphis also received 16 points from Gazmyne Herndon, 14 by Keke Hunter 13 from Alana Davis and 10 by Jamirah Shutes to bounce back from a 58-48 home setback against Toledo last year.

As a unit, the Tigers connected on a season-high 52.0 percent (26-of-50) from the field, including an impressive 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from three-point range, and 61.5 percent (23-of-29) from the charity stripe to win back-to-back games for the first time this year. Earlier this week, Memphis secured a 70-66 road triumph vs. Southern Illinois.

FIRST QUARTER
• The Rockets raced out to a 12-4 lead at the 5:31 mark on the strength of points from six different players.

• Memphis was quick to counter though, outscoring Toledo 12-4 for the remainder of the quarter to knot the score at 16-16. Griggs sparked the visitors' late run with three-consecutive triples to draw the teams even after the opening 10 minutes.

SECOND QUARTER
• Toledo's Davis knocked down her second trey to give the home team a 27-22 lead with 6:30 left in the first half, forcing Memphis to call a timeout. The Madison, Ga. buried a fall-away triple from the right wing to bring the home crowd to their feet.

• Unfortunately for the Rockets, the stoppage in play greatly benefited the Tigers, as they rattled off 17 of the next 22 points to put them in front 39-32 at the intermission. Once again, it was Griggs' outside shooting that triggered the late burst, as she buried two more three-point field goals to make it a seven-point difference at the break.

• Davis paced Toledo with 10 points in the first half, while Griggs had five triples and a contest-best 15 points.

THIRD QUARTER
• Toledo started the second half energized, receiving seven-consecutive points from Davis to claim a 44-41 lead at the 5:34 mark. The third-year Rocket was credited with a jumper, layup and her career-tying best third trey to help the Midnight Blue & Gold reclaim the advantage.

• Moments later though, Memphis' Griggs made two more triples to put the lead back in its favor, 52-45, with 3:06 left in the period. The sharp-shooting guard just did not miss, prompting Toledo to signal for a timeout.

• Much to the Rockets' dismay, the stoppage did not slow down Memphis. The visitors tallied three layups in the waning moments to take a 60-49 lead into the final period.

FOURTH QUARTER
• Toledo's deficit grew to as much as 13 points on two occasions in the fourth period, but Black's three triples made it a two-possession difference, 80-74, with 23 seconds remaining.

• The Rockets would not get any closer though, as Memphis knocked down its final four free throws to make the final score 83-76.

• The Tigers scored 16 of their 23 fourth-quarter points at the free throw line to hold off the resilient Rockets.

UP NEXT
• Toledo will entertain Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) member Valparaiso (2-3) on Wednesday, Nov. 27. The opening tip against the Crusaders is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.
