Men’s Cross Country Finishes 17th at NCAA Regionals

MADISON, Wis. - The University of Toledo men's cross country team finished 17th with 493 points at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Madison, Wis. on Friday.
Freshman Jacob Harris set pace for the Rockets, posting a time of 31:48.2 to take 54th. Senior Dismas Koech was next in for the Midnight Blue and Gold, clocking a time of 32:25.4, landing 84th. Freshman Jake Rethman stopped the clock at 32:50.7.
"We had a really good day on the men's side," said head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "It was the best team race of the season and the best finish our men's program has had in many, many years. However, I was disappointed for Raymond Korir, as he is definitely capable of a top 25 finish. He has a great work ethic along with a great attitude and you always want to see an athlete like that be rewarded. But he said he was cramping right from the first kilometer and it was obvious he was having a problem when we saw him that far back early in the race. It would have been really easy for him to quit on the race, but he fought as hard as he could."
Korir, a sophomore, finished 122nd with a time of 33:05.3.
"When you are expected to lead the team and be right up there in the mix and you find yourself running fourth or fifth, that can mentally be really hard. But Korir kept on climbing and gaining and gaining points. He never quits and that is something we want to keep emphasizing both on the men's and women's teams. You can't ever quit on your teammates even if you are not having a great individual race. So it was a bummer for him personally, but great effort by the men overall, most of which were on their first ever 10K. I can't say enough about the way they performed."
Purdue clinched the team victory with 79 points and Cincinnati's Aaron Bienenfeld took the individual crown with a time of 29:59.9.
