TOLEDO, Ohio — The University of Toledo volleyball team hosted rival Bowling Green on Friday night, falling in four sets to the Falcons.
It was a close match between the I-75 rivals; the first three sets were decided by two points and the last set of the night was decided by three. Junior Emma Swope tallied a team-high 14 kills, while junior Chloee Kleespies (13) and senior Zoe Birnbrich (11) each cracked double digits as well. Sophomore Megan Beasley added a match-high 42 assists, while junior Rhyen Neal led all comers with 25 digs.
Toledo (7-14, 0-9 MAC) hosts Miami on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. Fans can get in for free by showing a ticket stub from the Rockets' 3:30 p.m. football game against Eastern Michigan.
Set 1 (BGSU, 27-25)
Both teams recorded their highest attack percentage of the night in the first set. Toledo hit .382 while BGSU hit .257. The Rockets appeared to dominate play early, taking a 16-8 lead to kick off the match. Kleespies had five kills during that opening stretch to lead the way. Bowling Green did not back down though, clawing its way back to trim the Rockets' lead to just one, 20-19. Toledo reached set point three times but was unable to seal the deal. With a 25-24 lead, the Rockets allowed three straight points in a 27-25 BGSU win.
Set 2 (BGSU, 26-24)
The second set followed a similar script compared to the first. Toledo once again took an early lead, jumping ahead 9-6 at one point. The Falcons didn't wait so long to reclaim the lead though; They used a 7-1 run to take a 17-13 lead over the Rockets. Toledo hung around though, and a late 7-2 surge tied the score at 24-24. BGSU scored the final two points of the set, though, to win 26-24 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3 (Toledo, 26-24)
After winning the first two sets, Bowling Green grabbed the momentum in the third set by taking an 8-2 lead to kick things off. Toledo closed the gap to just one, 10-9, fairly quickly thanks to a 7-2 run that was fueled by five combined kills from Jaqua and Kleespies. The Rockets took their first lead of the third set at 16-15, and took its largest lead at 22-20 on a kill from Swope. BGSU tallied four of the next five points to put Toledo's backs against the wall, making the score 24-23 and bringing about match point. A Bowling Green attack error tied the set at 24-24, then Jaqua gave Toledo the lead with her third kill of the set. Swope ended things with a service ace to force a fourth set.
Set 4 (BGSU, 25-22)
Toledo took a 6-1 lead to take control of the fourth set from the onset. Bowling Green was able to score points in bunches to retake the lead, though; a 4-0 run and a 5-0 run ended with the Falcons on top, 12-11. Kleespies and Birnbrich tallied back-to-back kills to put Toledo back on top, 13-12, but that was the last time the Rockets would hold the lead in the fourth set. BGSU retook the lead at 14-13 and never relinquished its advantage. The final set of the night ended at 25-22.
