Toledo, Ohio - The University of Toledo men's tennis team is ready for a weekend of action at home against Division II opponent Wayne State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Division III opponent Denison on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee.
"I think both of these teams are dangerous so we need to be ready to go," said head coach
Al Wermer. "I wouldn't say we're as healthy as we would like, but all things considered, we're feeling pretty good. I think our team has a great mindset."
The Rockets came up short in a tough match-up against #2 Ohio State on Sunday, falling 4-0 to the Buckeyes. Junior
Danilo Vukotic, after dropping his first set 6-2, had just started gaining momentum in his match against No. 13 Kyle Seelig before Ohio State secured the sweep. Vukotic's match at the No. 2 spot was left unfinished 6-2, 4-5, with Vukotic leading in the second set.
Scouting Wayne State
Wayne State went 15-12 (6-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) last season. The Warriors had four 9-0 sweeps, with three over non-conference opponents. The Warriors fell in the GLIAC tournament championship in a 5-0 sweep by Ferris State, but fought their way to the second round of the NCAA Regionals, defeating Lewis 5-3 before falling to #10 Indianapolis 5-1.
Last Time Against Wayne State
The Rockets faced Wayne State last season on Feb. 23, defeating the warriors 4-3. Toledo had clinched the doubles point with victories from
Luka Vitosevic/Vukotic (6-3) and
Thawin Suksathaporn/
Reid Teatsorth (6-3). In singles Vitosevic won a thrilling three-set match at the No. 3 position 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Suksathaporn and Teatsorth swept their competition at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions in two sets.
Scouting Denison
Denison went 13-5 last season, going 4-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Big Red posted five sweeps on the season before heading to the NCAC tournament. In the NCAC tournament, Denison defeated Wooster (5-0) and Oberlin (5-1) before falling 5-2 to #13 Kenyon in the championship round.
Last Time Against Denison
The Rockets last faced Denison in the 2016-17 season on Feb. 10, where they made a clean 7-0 sweep of the Big Red. UT claimed the doubles point with victories from duos
