Toledo Hosts Defending MAC Champion Central Michigan on Wednesday

TOLEDO, Ohio - First place in the Mid-American Conference's West Division will be at stake on Wednesday, Jan. 23 when Toledo (11-5, 3-2 MAC) battles Central Michigan (13-4, 4-1 MAC) at home. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.
The Rockets are currently tied for second in the MAC West Division standings with Northern Illinois, one game behind the defending MAC Champion Chippewas.
UT is 73-38 (.658) versus MAC West Division opponents over the last 10-plus seasons under head coach Tricia Cullop, including a 12-9 (.571) ledger vs. Central Michigan. Thus far in 2018-19, Toledo has tallied a 2-0 record against division foes.
The Midnight Blue & Gold is coming off a 79-65 road triumph at arch-rival Bowling Green.
UT outscored BGSU 46-24 in the second half en route to claiming its sixth-straight win in the series. The Rockets shot 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from the floor and 81.2 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line over the final 20 minutes to erase the eight-point halftime deficit, 41-33.
Senior Mikaela Boyd paced a balanced UT attack with a season-high 25 points, including 19 in the pivotal second half. Boyd broke out of a scoring slump in a big way against BGSU, as she had a combined 25 points over the previous four contests.
Sophomore Nakiah Black added 16 points, senior Kaayla McIntyre had 15 and junior Mariella Santucci chipped in 13 to help Toledo top the 75-point plateau for a second-straight game and sixth time this year.
For the contest, the Rockets shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the field, including 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from three-point land, and a season-high 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the charity stripe.
UT also dominated the glass, 42-26, highlighted by a game-high 10 boards by McIntyre to give the local product her second-consecutive double-double, third on the year, and 12th as a Rocket. Â Â
Toledo, which is 5-2 at Savage Arena this season, is fueled offensively by McIntyre Santucci, Boyd and Black, who are averaging 15.3, 10.8, 9.9 and 8.9 ppg, respectively.
The Rockets will tangle with a highly-skilled CMU team that has won five of its last six games. Most recently, the Chippewas secured an 82-75 road win at Kent State on Saturday.
Micaela Kelly paced a balanced Central Michigan attack with 20 points vs. the Golden Flashes, followed closely by 2017-18 first-team All-MAC honoree Presley Hudson, second-team all-league selection Reyna Frost and Kyra Russell with 18, 17 and 15, respectively.
CMU, which is 9-1 away from home, possesses a high-powered offense with three players averaging at least 14.5 points per game fueled by Hudson's and Frost's 20.8 and 18.5 ppg, respectively.
Tomorrow's MAC West Division match-up will pit UT's stingy defense against CMU's high-powered defense. Toledo is currently second in the league in scoring defense (59.5 ppg), third in overall field-goal percentage defense (.382, 345-of-903) and fourth in three-point field-goal percentage defense (.306, 91-of-297), while Central Michigan is first in overall field-goal percentage (.483, 496-of-1,026) and three-point field-goal percentage (.402, 163-of-405), third in scoring offense (79.7 ppg).
In addition, the Rockets are surrendering 5.7 triples per contest, the third-lowest mark in the league, while the Chippewas are making 9.6 treys, the third-highest total in the MAC.
