Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's swimming and diving team closed out the second-to-last home dual of the year today with a 174-126 loss to Ohio University. Despite the final score, UT had an impressive outing that featured sophomore
Kristen Straszacker scoring 19 points. Sophomore
Lisa Eriksson (13) and junior
Bec Welke (11) also contributed scoring swims for UT. The three aforementioned combined for all six of Toledo's event victories.
"I think we did well and I think we did a little better than expected," head coach Jonas Persson said. "We've had a lot of injuries so we've been working through that, but overall we did well. We're focusing on the MAC championships that are coming up and today was another day to prepare and get ready for that meet."
Straszacker swam in three events for the Midnight Blue and Gold, scoring in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 individual medley. In the 100, Straszacker was one second away from setting a new personal record after winning in 57.76. The Cape Town, South Africa native also won the 200 back, finishing in 2:04.94. In her final swim of the day, Straszacker stopped the clock in 2:12.13 to take sixth in the 200 IM.
"She's been great in our dual meets," Persson said of Straszacker. "She had a tougher time at the Zippy Invite because she's young and still gaining that experience of racing against really fast swimmers, but she's stepping up, she's tough, and she's a good leader for our team."
Eriksson had a dominating performance in the pool. The Strangas, Sweden native won the 50 free in 24.44, took second in the 100 free in 53.39, and helped the 400 medley relay (3:51.65, 52.43 split) and 200 free relay (1:38.04, 24.45 split) squads to first-place victories as well. Her time in the 50 free was also one second behind her personal record.
Welke was a workhorse on the evening for UT too, contributing a personal victory in the 100 breast (first, 1:05.37) while helping the 400 medley relay (1:05.18 split) and the 200 free relay (24.31 split) squads take the gold.
On the boards, freshman diver
Sydney Jackson set a personal record in the 3-meter. In her second time ever competing in the event, Jackson recorded a 223.65 to take fifth.
