Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Toledo women's track & field team kicked off their indoor season at Michigan's Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor today. The Rockets recorded six top-five finishes, including a personal record in the triple jump by sophomore Janell Rowe.
Â
"It was kind of a mixed bag," said head coach Linh Nguyen. "I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, as we've only been together for a week. We definitely have some things to work on. I think mostly we just need to get back into a competitive mentality."
Â
On the track, senior Shanice Williams took second in the 60-meter dash (7.52), coming within a tenth of second of her PR. Freshman Rayna Horner finished fifth in the 400-meter (58.70). Claire Steigerwald set the pace for the Rockets in the 3K event, taking ninth with a time of 9:51.41 and with Rebecca Snyder and Michelle Hostettler following closely to take 12th (10:20.9) and 15th (10:39.33), respectively.Â
Â
"Claire had a great meet," Nguyen said. "In her track debut for us, she ran a really good time in the 3K. I thought Rebecca Snyder and Shanice Williams also had solid races."
In field events, Rowe set a PR in the triple jump with a distance of 11.88, placing third. Senior Katie Dewey took sixth in shot put with a throw of 13.95m, while senior Deja Martin, with a long jump of 5.36m, took fifth. Freshman Julia Smith landed in a three-person tie for fourth in the high jump event, finishing with a height of 1.60m.
Â
Up Next
Looking ahead to the Rockets' next meet (Jan. 18 vs Bowling Green), Nguyen hopes to spark the competitive mentality with the rivalry between Toledo and BGSU.Â
"Looking at next week's dual meet against BG, there's always a little bit more juice for a meet like that," said Nguyen. "I think it's the perfect type of meet to have early in the season because it gets the team fired up and gets the competitive juices going."Â
