Toledo, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's track & field squad will hit the road on Saturday for the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan. Competition kicks off at 11 a.m.
The 2019 Rockets return with a veteran team, losing only four athletes to graduation. This year's seniors offer a wealth of experience and leadership after finishing fifth as a team in both MAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships and sending qualifiers to the NCAA preliminaries and finals.
Â
"We have some very strong seniors in the distance events with Janelle Noe, Jennifer Lichter, Olivia Chinn and Joan Jepkirui," said head coach Linh Nguyen. "We have seniors who are not only good athletes, good teammates, but they've been there, they've done it before, and they've competed the NCAA Championship level. You can count on them.
Â
"On the sprint side we have good seniors like Nautica Hill, Christina Johnson and Shanice Williams. And then we have strong seniors in the throws with Sally Frank, Katie Dewey and Anna Bellman. Honestly we got a lot of seniors all over the place. It's the experience they bring, the steadiness. They've been there before, they've been to the MAC Championships, they've scored points, they know how to do it, they know what it takes. I think having that presence helps a lot."
Â
Going into the first meet of the indoor season, Nguyen is optimistic. "We just want to get off on a good note, start the season off on the right foot and hopefully get some MAC qualifying performances. that should give us an idea of where we are and what we need to do in training going forward."
Â
Before winter break, distance competitors Athena Welsh and Janelle Noe performed in the Grand Valley State University Holiday Invitational 5K event. Welsh landed in third place with a time of 16:24.28, setting a personal record. Noe finished 23rd (17:39.68) in what was her first 5K.
